BOTKINS — A St. Marys man was arrested Sunday afternoon after trying to elude law enforcement officials.
According to Botkins Police Chief Tom Glass, Gary J. Huff, 65, of St. Marys, has been charged with 12 point suspension, court suspension and no license plates. He will appear in Sidney Municipal Court Monday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m.
The incident began around 2:10 p.m. Sunday when Glass received a call that there was a vehicle in the ditch at County Road 25A and Lock Two Road. The vehicle didn’t have any license plates on it. Witnesses told Glass that the driver left the vehicle and went down Lock Two Road where he entered a cornfield.
With the assistance of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, a perimeter was set up and the suspect was spotted as he crossed Interstate 75 and entered another field. Huff was taken into custody approximately a half hour after the incident began in the area of Botkins Road.
“The vehicle is registered to his sister who lives in St. Marys,” said Glass. “He was storing it for her. He decided to go for a drive even though it had no plates.”
Huff, said Glass, was driving under suspension for a driving under the influence charge.
The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded.
Assisting at the scene were Deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Center Police Department and Wapakoneta Police Officer Joe Welker and his K-9. There were 10 officers on the scene assisting with the search and arrest.
