November 3, 1891

Although the returns from across the state are not all in, William McKinley has apparently defeated Governor James E. Campbell in the race for governor by about 15,000 votes. The four precincts in Sidney showed Campbell with 600 votes and McKinley with 550. Campbell also carried Clinton Township by 17 votes.

The Valley City has added another industry to the list of enterprises that have been able to do business with the Board of Improvement. It will be known as the Sidney Carriage and Buggy Body Co. which signifies its business. The firm comes from Bellefontaine. The company plans to build on land south of the pole factory. Plans are to start work on the building at once.

The Big Four railway has put down about 75 feet of new platform at the station here.

100 Years

November 3, 1916

Someone entered the Baptist Church last evening and scattered books and papers all around on the floor of the building. As far as could be determined, nothing of value was missing. Entrance was gained through a basement window.

The Wheaton Poultry Packing Plant at Jackson Center will begin operations next week for the winter. Officials of the company report that the poultry crop is not as large as in former years, turkeys being particularly scarce.

75 Years

November 3, 1941

The Rt. Rev. Beverley D. Tucker, bishop of Ohio of the Episcopal Church, will visit the local St. Mark’s parish tomorrow for confirmation and observance of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the church in Sidney. The service will be held at 4 o’clock, with the choir of the Church of the Holy Trinity at Bellefontaine assisting.

Sgt. Wilbur (Bud) Piper, Jr., has received his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army and has arrived at his home here and will resume his former position at the Liberty Folder Co. He has been stationed at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

50 Years

November 3, 1966

More than 2 inches of wet snow sent street and highway maintenance crews into action today for the first time in the current fall and winter season.

A sharp drop in mercury readings could result in dangerously frozen surfaces, some feared. Autoists were urged to use care in driving on the wet pavement.

Mrs. Ruth Tippie, assisted by Mrs. Clarence Fisher, were hostesses in the Tippie home for the November meeting of the Women’s Society of World Service of the Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church.

An election of officers was conducted by Mrs. Richard Zimpher, chairman of the nominating committee. Results of the election showed Mrs. Roger McGee, president; Mrs. Lawrence Potts, vice president; Mrs. Maurice Boyer, secretary; Mrs. Earl Reish, treasurer.

PORT JEFFERSON – Now under construction is a new building to house the Volunteer Fire Dept. which is being paid for by the Port Jefferson Community Club.

It is believed this is the first time a club has paid for construction of such a building. Total cost will be approximately $15,000. The new 55 by 40-foot building will provide places for the company’s three trucks, two of which now stand outside a small building attached to the village hall which has been used since the first department was established.

25 Years

November 3, 1991

Jamie King will never forget her appearance at the Division III state country championships. She finished second to Stacy Ritter in the regional meet. At state, she competed against Ritter to for All Ohio honors. She was 11th as a freshman and 30th as a sophomore. Her coach is Dave Mielke. Jamie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James King.

In the boys Division III race, it will be Botkins and Anna. This is the first appearance for Anna. Botkins was at the state meet 10 years ago. the two teams have run against each other many times this year.
