Tree board considers plans tree grant

SIDNEY — Sidney Tree Board considered plans for the $50,000 DP&L tree grant check received on Arbor Day, April 29, from its Right Tree Right Place program at the Oct. 20 meeting.

The grant plus an additional $10,000 from the city budget will be used to plant trees downtown and its surrounding blocks, and in city parks where many trees have been removed.

Administration Assistant Joyce Reier shared with the board the lowest bid for the project was “quiet a bit over the $60,000 budget.” She said the contractor suggested lower costing substitute species options, and that information would be sent to the board after the pre-planting meeting.

Sidney Cycles’ representative Brandi Thompson attended to express her interest in trees and shared that their recent bike ride incorporated a tree-touring theme. She said the group has reserved a booth at the The Great Sidney Farmers’ Market during bicycle month in May. Boardmember Michael Jannides advised to her to contact Sidney Alive, as they may be interested in her attendance at one of their meetings.

Reier told the board the proper Lodging Tax grant form was completed and submitted to the Sidney Lodging Tax Committee. She said they hope to hear a response by the end of the year.

Boardmember Anne Sharp reported she and Mayor Mike Barhorst attended and enjoyed the Tree Commission Academy for two days in September, in Piqua. The second, sophomore session is set for February.

Boardmember Warren Koogler issued his resignation due to he and his wife’s move to Miami County at the first of the year.
