Offended by recent editorial column

To the editor:

I write this letter as a response to Vivian Blevins article in Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, editorial, titled: Everyone has equal protection of the laws. I find three of her conclusions offensive.

1) Blevins begins her article by stating she saw an editorial cartoon with Newt Gingrich wearing a red baseball cap with lettering proclaiming, “Make Women Mute Again.” She then launches into a man-hating attack complete with what she says are “slang and code words.” Words that I have never heard anyone use. An editorial cartoon is just an expression of someone’s “viewpoint,” (code-word for agenda), and to write an article based on it without making it clear where it came from is at least “misleading,” (code-word for dishonest).

2) She states the Constitution is a living breathing document which the courts interpret as time changes and cases come before it. This is a position many disagree with. When our founders wrote the Constitution, they were aware that times and situations change, so they added a way to amend the Constitution legislatively, and we have amended it 27 times. This Constitution is the law of the land that sets up our government and protects our freedoms and liberties. I believe our founders would be horrified that justices appointed for life, and accountable to no one, would legislate from the bench on what this document really says.

3) On her list of advances for women in this country is one that breaks my heart: 1973 — Supreme Court declares a women’s right to an abortion. Since I did accuse Blevins of being misleading, before, I will give her credit for using the wording “right to an abortion,” instead of the much less offensive and less accurate “freedom of choice.” From 1973 to 2015 we have had 53,405,766 abortions in the United States. Source — Guttmacher Institute an affiliate of Planned Parenthood. God forgive us when we consider over 56 million unborn babies killed a sign of progress. The irony of this for a true feminist is statistically over 28 million of these unborn babies are little girls. Turn back the clock on this, YOU BET.
