December 29, 1891

The helmets of the Big Four – the Sidney police – arrived last night and appear “absolutely for the first time in public.” They are of the regulation pattern, with a heavy bell-crown and gold corn, and give “our finest” a Scotland Yard appearance.

100 Years

December 29, 1916

Mrs. L.M. Studevant has been appointed by Mrs. Harriet Taylor Upton, president of the Ohio Women’s Suffrage Association, as president of the Shelby County Suffrage Association.

75 Years

December 29, 1941

The fate of Manila was shrouded in a communications blackout today as the heavily-outnumbered forces of General Douglas MacArthur attempted to organize their lines against the merciless blitz of Japan’s swarming invaders.

50 Years

December 29, 1966

A Sidney man, Walter Faulkner of 531 South Main Avenue, has been elected an Ohio Wesleyan University Associate. The Associates are a group of some 200 men and women throughout the nation dedicated to the development and growth of the university. Faulkner, who is secretary and manager of purchases at Monarch Machine Tool Co., is a 1935 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan

LOS ANGELES – Sandy Koufax had a $1 million present today on his 31st birthday to take away some of the sting from his retirement as baseball’s leading pitcher of the modern era because of an arthritic elbow.

25 Years

December 29, 1991

As he leaves a 34-year career in education, Eugene Emter, retiring superintendent of the Sidney City Schools, predicts there will be even more state control of schools in the future and schools will be expected to educate children at an even younger age. There will be much greater level of state control and a loss of local control, said Emter, who officially retired today after seven years as superintendent here.

Construction of the new Aldi discount supermarket is well under way off Ohio 47 on the west side of the city. The store is expected to be about the same size as one the firm operates in Piqua. A German firm, Aldi Inc. is a chain with 2,500 stores worldwide. It has more than 270 stores in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas and Iowa.
