BOTKINS — A driver from Milton, Ontario, was cited for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign following a crash involving two semi-tractor trailers Tuesday at 12:10 p.m.

According to Botkins Police Chief Tom Glass, Subuktageen Ahmad, 50, of Milton, Ontario, was westbound on state Route 274 and had stopped at the post stop sign at the intersection of County Road 25A. He failed to see a semi-tractor trailer driven by Douglas Emrick, 70, of Sidney, who was northbound on County Road 25A.

Ahmad pulled into the intersection and struck Emrick’s vehicle. The impact of the collision caused Emrick’s vehicle to swerve to the left and roll over. The load of lime Emrick was transporting, along with diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway. Botkins Fire Department contained the spill. The Shelby County EMA and Ohio EPA were contacted about the spill.

Power and cable lines were knocked down during the crash. DP&L and other utility companies responded to the scene.

Both Ahmad and Emrick were transported to Wilson Health by Anna Rescue. Ahman was treated and released. Emrick was admitted to the hospital, said Glass. His injuries are not known.

County Road 25A was closed from 12:15 to 6 p.m., said Glass.

The Ohio Highway Patrol’s Enforcement Unit was on the scene to inspect the vehicles and check the log books, he said.

Assisting at the scene was an Ohio Highway Patrol trooper, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Anna Police Department, Jackson Center Police Department, Botkins Street Department, Shelby County Highway Department and the Ohio Highway Department of Transportation.

Glass said one of the drivers said the foggy conditions made it hard to see other vehicles on the road.

Both semis were disabled in the crash and towed from the scene.
