BEEF 509 is a two-day class held to raise the awareness level about beef and why it sometimes misses its mark with consumers’ palates and producers’ pocketbooks. This hands-on program will take place on Saturdays, Feb. 25 and March 4 at the OSU Animal Sciences building in Columbus. I participated last year and I have to say this is an intensive two days!! It was a great learning experience that focused on various cuts, carcass quality, and dollar value. (I did learn that processing a steer is a lot of physical work … I’m too old for all that!)

The registration fee for each participant is $150. This program is sponsored by a partnership of Ohio Beef Council, OSU Extension, and OSU Department of Animal Sciences. For additional information on BEEF 509, visit www.ohiocattle.org and look under “events and programs.” We also have copies of the agenda and registration here at the office. Deadline for registration is Jan. 23. A maximum of 32 spaces are available on a first come, first served basis.

Well, Today’s the Day: West Ohio Agronomy Day!! We should have a good turn-out! However, if you missed/couldn’t attend today’s session, we will be holding the Evening Portion next Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Days Inn in Sidney. We’ll have a light supper and market update at 5 p.m. and the program begins at 5:30 p.m. Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification Training ($35) will be finished by 8:30 p.m. The two-hour Fertilizer Applicator Certification Training will be held from 8:45 to 11 p.m. If you haven’t gotten your reservations in, please do so soon! I need a final count for supper! Thanks!
