Jackets lose to Firebirds

KETTERING — Sidney mustered just 15 points in the first half and never recovered in losing 60-51 to Fairmont in the Flyin’ to the Hoop event at Trent Arena in Kettering Friday night.

The loss leaves the Jackets 9-2 on the year and they face another difficult challenge Tuesday night when they travel to Centerville.

The Jackets opened with just two points in the opening quarter before getting untracked in the second quarter. Still, they were down 26-15 at the half, and the Fairmont lead ballooned to 40-25 after three periods. Only a 26-point final period made the score more respectable.

Sidney was 19-for-56 from the floor for 34 percent and Fairmont was only slightly better, 19-for-55 for 34.5 percent.

Andre Gordon was the only Sidney player in double figures. He finished with 17 but struggled from the field, hitting just six of his 21 shots. He was, however, 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

Isaiah Bowser added nine points and Ratez Roberts had three blocked shots.

The big difference was on the boards, where the Firebirds dominated. They outrebounded the Jackets 44-33, and 18 of the rebounds came on the offensive end.

In addition, Fairmont was 17 for 20 from the line compared to 10 for 12 for the Jackets.

Lehman 54, Riverside 48

A big first half led the Lehman Cavaliers to their third consecutive victory Friday night, this one in Northwest Central Conference play, 54-48, over visiting Riverside in the Lehman gym.

The Cavaliers go to 2-1 in the NWCC and 4-6 overall and will try to make it four in a row tonight at Mississinawa Valley in non-league play.

The Pirates are now 0-3 in the league and 2-9 overall and host West Liberty-Salem on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers poured in 35 points in the first half, leading 20-12 after one quarter and expanding the margin to 35-18 at the half.

The Pirates mounted a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Cavs 13-5, with Trey Helmlinger getting eight points.

The Cavs were outscored again in the final period, but had enough of a lead to survive.

“We’re so young and we’re not mentally tough yet,” said Lehman coach Tim Gleason. “We came out and played probably our best first half of the season, but then didn’t play well in the second.”

Kam Lee got the Cavaliers off to the strong start, dropping in three three-pointers in the opening quarter. He went on to lead everybody in scoring with 20 points, and was the only Cavalier in double figures.

Riverside had two in double figures, with Helmlinger finishing with 15 and Hank Harshbarger 12.

Russia 43, Houston 33

RUSSIA — Houston threw a major scare into league leading Russia, forcing the Raiders to come from behind in the final period before pulling out a 43-33 victory in County play Friday.

Russia goes to 6-1 in the league and 11-2 overall heading to Triad tonight.

Houston is 1-6 in the league and 1-10 overall and hosts Covington Tuesday.

Houston took a 30-29 lead with five minutes remaining in the game, but the Raiders rallied back and avoided a major upset.

Jack Dapore led the Raiders with 21 and had all five of the team’s three-pointers.. Cameron Arnold and Howie Ludwig both had 14 for Houston.

Fairlawn 52, Botkins 39

BOTKINS — Fairlawn had its hands full against Botkins Friday, but pulled away late to a 52-39 victory in County action.

Nathan Lessing, Fairlawn’s senior standout who is headed toward a new all-time County scoring record, had 25 to lead the Jets and is now just 18 points shy of the record held by Tom Brandewie of Fort Loramie of 1,834. He gets his next chance to break it Tuesday at home against Mechanicsburg.

Fairlawn goes to 5-2 in the league and 8-2 overall and Botkins is 0-7 in the league and 4-9 overall heading into a game at Fort Loramie Friday.

Luke Bergman had 15 points for Botkins, and Spencer Heuker added 10. Luke Hickman added 11 for the Jets.

DELPHOS — New Knoxville went on the road and lost a 70-43 verdict to Delphos St. John’s in action Friday night.

The loss leaves the Rangers at 1-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference and 4-5 overall heading to Jackson Center tonight.

Jonah Lageman had 18 to lead the Rangers, hitting three three-pointers.

Fort Recovery 56, Bremen 38

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen dropped a 56-38 verdict to Fort Recovery in MAC action Friday.

The Cardinals drop to 0-10 on the year and play at Covington tonight.

Nolan Bornhorst had 15 to lead the Cardinals, and Luke Vonderhaar added 12.
