PIQUA — The Sidney High boys bowling team received a real threat to its unbeaten record from archrival Piqua on Thursday at Brel-Aire Lanes in Piqua.

But the Yellow Jackets were able to pull out a 66-pin victory over the Indians and remain perfect on the season.

The scores were 2023 to 1957, and it put the Jackets at 7-0 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference American North Division and 10-0 overall heading into a match at Greenville on Tuesday.

“This was a nail biter,” said Sidney coach Trent Knoop. “It came down to the final baker game to pull off the win. We were bowling on a very tough shot. We battled through the adversity and came out with a victory.”

Josh Abbott led the team with a 380 series on games of 200 and 180, and Austin Simon was just 20 pins back with a 185 and a 175. Lucas Finke added a 200 game.

The Lady Jackets had an even closer match, winning by just 18 pins at 1685 to 1667.

The win has the Sidney girls at 5-2 in the North and 5-5 overall. They are just one game behind league-leading Troy, which lost its first league match Thursday to Vandalia.

For Sidney, Jenna Beatty bowled a 378 series on games of 200 and 178, and Heather Gold added a 322 on games of 182 and 140. Kathryn Saunders had a 282 series and Cameron Fogle a 251 series.

“This one also came down to the last baker game,” said Knoop. “The girls did the same thing as the guys, battled through the adversity and walked out with a win. It’s always nice beating a rival.”
