March 3, 1892

Arrangements have been made for incorporating an organization to be known as the “Tawawa Fishing and Boating Club.” It will be a limited stock company of about 30 members. It has leased what is known as the Maxwell pond, and upon its sloping banks will erect a handsome and substantial club house. The club will have jurisdiction over the race and several ponds connected with the one named, which were hereafter be called Tawawa Lake.

The Model Clothing store has a window ornamented with five mounted deer heads. The deer were shot in Wisconsin by James Wilson last fall and have been mounted by J.E. Bush.

Two persons from the country spent all of yesterday afternoon hunting for two houses in which to live. They could find none, and they have their doubts about moving to town.

100 Years

March 3, 1917

Taylor A. Faulder, owner of the Faulder Grocery in the Monumental building, has sold the business to L.B. Kelley. The latter took over the operation today. Mr. Faulder started the business two years ago. He is retiring because of his health. The store will now be known as the Kelly Grocery Co.

James W. Stuber, of Upper Sandusky, a former Sidney boy, has been elected president of the Ohio Fish and Game Inspectors’ Association, following the resignation of Frank Dagenhart, of Springfield.

The Ohio Senate passed the controversial Apple bill, compelling all telephone companies to give long-distance connection with every other company. There appears to be some question as to the validity of the bill and it will probably be tested in the courts by the large telephone companies.

The Killarney girls met their first defeat of the season at Middletown high school last night by a score of 33 to 8. They were not out-classed in playing but were handicapped by the size of the M.H.S. girls. The smallest girl on their team was larger than any of the Sidney players.

75 Years

March 3, 1942

More than one-third (34.6 percent) of the residential rents in Sidney increased between September 1940 and November 1941, according to a survey made by the WPA division of research in cooperation with the local WPA office. For units which had increases in monthly rent the average rise was $4.21, according to the report.

Principal leads in the “Musical Revue of 1942” to be presented tomorrow evening by the boys’ and girls’ glee clubs of Sidney High school, will be played by Ted Harsh, Louis Mackey, Eddie Matthews, Lois Kennedy, Virginia Hoewischer, Peggy and Joan Johnston, Kitty Dearth, Shirley Shively, Fred Stang, Ward Beer, Jr., David Barr, and David Lantz.

Mary Bess Spraul, who has been on the nursing staff at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, has accepted a position as a nurse on the staff at Monarch Machine Tool Co. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Spraul, Belmont street.

Sidney will meet Dayton Parker Co-op in the opening game of the Southwestern district basketball tournament at Dayton this evening.

50 Years

March 3, 1967

RUSSIA – Unless unexpected opposition develops, Russia should be an incorporated village by Jan. 1, 1968. The plan to incorporate was well accepted by villagers at a meeting called by the Russia Civic Association Friday night. Persons at the meeting who own land signed the petition to be presented to Shelby county commissioners. Charles Grogean, past president of the Civic Association, was named agent for the community. He will deliver the petition to the commissioners.

County commissioners today signed a contract, leasing the Children’s Home farm to Virgil Martin, R.R. 3, Sidney, for one year, beginning Mar. 1. Martin will operate the farm on a 50-50 basis, sharing crops and most of the expenses with the county. He succeeds Roland Hollenbacher, R.R. 3, Sidney, as the “home” farmer. Hollenbacher had informed the commissioners that because of other commitments he would be unable to renew the contract this year.

VERSAILLES – James Phelan was named president of the Versailles Development Association at a meeting Wednesday night. Other officers are Vernon Winner, first vice president; Larry Wilhelm, second vice president, and Ralph Mescher, third vice president. Paul Evinger was retained as treasurer and Stewart Prakel was re-elected secretary.

25 Years

March 3, 1992

The Lady Jacket basketball team put on a great performance in defeating Springfield North. The opponent had a record of 18-4 coming into the game. Sidney prevailed 30-23 to advance to the district tournament. They will play Cincinnati Mother of Mercy, the number two ranked team in the state. The game will be played in Vandalia.

Wilson Memorial Hospital just released an audit reflecting its financial status. It made a profit of over $2 million in 1991. This continued a trend from 1990, when the hospital earned a profit of $1,112,000. However, 27% of its accounts receivable were uncollectable. 87% of this amount was attributed to Medicaid or Medicare.
