The Republicans have nominated the following candidates for corporation and township officials: A.B.C. Hitchcock, mayor; John Evans and J.C. Haines, marshal; John G. McClure, treasurer; J.W. Knox, clerk; G.C. Anderson, cemetery trustee; J.W. Kendall, street commissioner; Robert B. Haslup, water works trustee; George Reddish, township trustee; C.F. Hickok and A.J. Hess, school board members.

The Infirmary directors made their semi-annual report the county commissioners yesterday. The present number of inmates is 58. Since the last report 17 were received; five were discharged; there were four deaths, one ran away, and one was sent to another institution. Operating expenses for the period were $4,320, with the county poor fund contributing $131.50 of this amount.

Strawberries at 60 cents per quart were in the market today.

100 Years

March 9, 1917

A movement is now underway to make a public park out of the city property opposite Graceland cemetery. This property has been owned by the city for several years and people have wondered why it has not been improved. The fact this is it low land precludes it being used for other purposes.

A.J. Hess has formed a partnership with his sons, Royan Hess and Harry K. Hess, the firm being known as Hess & Hess. Their offices will be in Rooms 4, 5, 6, and 7 in the Woodward building.

A letter of commendation on the work of the normal school at Anna has been received by the president of the board of education at Anna from Prof. C.E. Oliver, high school inspector, following his recent inspection of the school. There are now 13 students in the school which is being taught by Harnett B. Early.

The report of the visiting nurse for the month of February shows that the number of calls during the month were nearly double those of January, totaling for the month 224 calls.

March 9, 1942

Sidney police reported today that the 1940 Hudson sedan belonging to R.V. Cromes, stolen from the front of the Cromes and Wiessinger Funeral Home Saturday evening, had been recovered in Bluffton, O. The car was found abandoned in the mud at the end of a deadend street in that village. The gas tank was empty.

The Anna High school Rockers reached the semi-finals of the district tournament at Springfield Saturday night by defeating Xenia East 46 to 35, to chalk up their 21st victory of the season.

Names of the Shelby county men who registered in the third selective service call with have their cards reshuffled tonight and then drawn to determine their serial numbers. The county board will hold its regular meeting this evening and draw cards for the national lottery on Mar. 17, when the order number will be determined.

Congressman Robert F. Jones, of Lima, today announced his candidacy for a third term in congress from the Fourth Congressional district. No formal announcement of an opponent on the Republican ticket has been made.

50 Years

March 9, 1967

County auditor Thelma Short will begin duties next Monday on the four-year term in office to which she was elected last November, it was noted today. She is expected to be sworn in Saturday. Mrs. Short served by appointment the final 18 months of the term of her late husband, Thomas Short, who died in office.

Miss Jean E. Fitzwater, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fitzwater, 627 South Ohio avenue, Sidney, has been named to the dean’s list at Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware. Miss Fitzwater is a sophomore at the university.

URBANA – A Trans World Airline plane with 21 passengers and a crew of four aboard crashed near here today after an apparent collision with a small plane. The Ohio Highway Patrol said the wreckage of a small private plane was found two miles away. The Champaign County sheriff’s office said there were no survivors. The crash occurred in a wooded area near two rural roads. The wreckage of the TWC plane was scattered over several acres in the Kiser Lake area.

The battle is over. Sidney High School principal Bob Grueser will not be returning to his position next year. Superintendant Lew Blackford had recommended Grueser be given a one year limited contract. The school board members voted 3-2 to non-renew his contract. Voting against Grueser were Elizabeth Tramontana, Karen Kinninger and Bill Fuktz. Supporting Grueser were Robert Baird and David Fogt. Teacher Bill Ross and Scott Wallace, a senior at the high school, spoke in support of retaining Grueser. Wallace commented the principal has strong support among the students. “To not bring him back would be a grave mistake,” he stated. Dr. Ross noted Grueser’s strong leadership skills and his “can do attitude.”
