Crashes

The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) investigated two crashes at mile-marker 88 on Interstate 75 on Wednesday morning.

The OSP and Sidney Medics responded to the first crash that occurred at 8:54 a.m. after a northbound semitrailer driven by Scottie Hoffman, 47, of Hurricane, West Virginia, lost the rear tandem on his trailer and both wheels came off and went across the northbound lanes, over into the southbound lanes and struck the front driver’s side corner of a southbound full size pickup truck hauling a travel-trailer driven by Dennis Emmel, 23, of Prescott, Michigan.

There were no injuries or citations issued. Emmel refused treatment of Sidney Medics.

• The OSP was already on the scene when the second crash occurred around 9:50 a.m. The driver of a southbound vehicle was cited for driving too slow and texting and driving. According the OSP, the driver was traveling in the right lane and had slowed down below 50 MPH and was taking pictures while driving when a semitrailer traveling behind him wasn’t able to slow down in time and swerved to avoid a collision. The semitrailer then went into the left southbound lane, jackknifed and went across the median, across the northbound lanes and struck the guardrail on the northbound side.

There were no injuries, or crashes with other vehicles. No other citations were issued.

About eight miles of northbound traffic was backed up for about an hour.

The names of those involved in the second accident were not released by the OSP.
