Staff report

The Sidney High girls were finally able to open their softball season on Wednesday, and it was a memorable outing.

Sidney pitcher Grace Shell faced the minimum 15 batters and pitched a no-hitter in a 10-0 run-rule verdict over visiting West Carrollton. she struck out five and walked one.

She got plenty of support from the offense. Mackenzie Bates, Grace Shell and Casey Swiger all singled and doubles and Maddie White had two singles, scored twice and drove in two runs.

“We were really hitting the ball,” said Sidney coach Wade New. “I think this is is going to be a pretty good hitting team.”

He said Shell’s no-hitter was preserved by two outstanding plays in the outfield, one by Emily Knasel and the other by Morgan Carey.

Sidney, 1-0, won’t return to action until Saturday in a home doubleheader with West Milton beginning at noon.
