Staff report

BOTKINS — Botkins hosted Jackson Center and Indian Lake in a three-team meet on its new track Saturday.

When the day ended, the Botkins boys and the Jackson Center girls came out on top.

The Botkins boys totaled 68 points to beat out Indian Lake’s 56.5. The Tigers had 32.5.

Highlighting the meet for the winning team was the effort of Josh Miller in the shot put and discus. The returning state qualifier won both with impressive early-season distances on a cold and blustery day.

He heaved the shot put 54-feet, 9-inches, and the discus 146-3. In both events, he took first over teammate Joe Shuga.

Also for Botkins, Micah Smock won two events. He was first in the 110 hurdles in 16.12 and first in the 300 hurdles in 45.09.

Also winning for the Trojans were the 400, 1600 and 3200 relay teams, Austin Fullenkamp in the 1600, and Matthew Prout in the 3200.

Jackson Center had two first-place finishers, including Sean March in the 800 and Jaren Reese in the high jump.

• Like the Botkins boys, the Lady Trojans were also highlighted by their shot and discus standout, as well as a three-event winner.

Grace Homan, also a state qualifier last season, put up some impressive numbers Saturday, winning the shot put with a distance of 38-7, and the discus with a toss of 116-6. She won the shot put by just under 13 feet, and her discus distance was over 32 feet better than the runner-up.

Teammate Adriana Jutte had quite a day, being the only athlete to win three events. She won both hurdles races and added in the 100 dash.

Team champion Jackson Center was led by Lexi Schmiesing, who won the 800 and 1600 runs for the Lady Tiger.

Jackson also got a first from Kennadie Reese in the long jump and from its 400, 800 and 3200 relays.

Other wins for Botkins came from Hannah Bailey in the high jump and the 1600 relay foursome.

Lehman 30, 15, HN 0, 0

DOLA — Lehman had 45 runs and 43 hits on the day in sweeping a doubleheader from Hardin Northern in Northwest Central Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The wins give the Cavaliers a 3-0 record heading into a game today at Marion Local.

The first game Saturday ended up 30-0 in five innings, and included something that Lehman head coach Dave King said he’d never experienced in his lengthy career.

The Cavs led 1-0 after scoring a run in the first. Then in the second inning, they had a runner on second and two outs. But before the inning ended, they scored 21 runs, and finished the inning with 18 hits, 17 of them coming after two were out.

“I’d never seen anything like that,” said King. “It didn’t matter who was up or who was pitching, we just got solid hits.”

For the game, Dylan Arnold had two doubles and a triple and Brandon Barhorst had a double.

The second game ended up 15-0 with the Cavs adding 15 more hits, including a double and a triple by Arnold, and doubles by Parker Riley and Tyler Lachey.
