ANNA — Anna High School is searching for a new head girls basketball coach after the resignation of Doug Martin, who held the position the past three seasons.

Martin confirmed Monday night that he will be taking a job as an assistant coach in the women’s basketball program at Edison State Community College. There, he will join Anna resident Tim McMahon, who is the head coach of the Lady Chargers and also a former head softball coach at Anna.

Martin, a longtime coach in the Anna system at different levels, won almost twice as many games as he lost in his three seasons at Anna. His first team was 18-9, followed by a 21-4 record last year. This year, the Lady Rockets finished 11-13, giving Martin a three-year record at the school of 50-26.

“It was kind of a frustrating year,” Martin said. “And I have three grandkids now and I want to spend more time with them. And there were other things I wanted to pursue. So I just felt it was time to let some new leadership step in. After 20-some odd years in the program, I feel like I’m leaving it in pretty good shape.”

He said he had a desire to move to the next level in his coaching career, and Edison was it.

“I thought about the Sidney (high school) job, and maybe going to Division 1 (which Sidney is),” he said. “But the job at Edison presented itself and I jumped on it.”

It will be a new experience for Martin because in addition to coaching, he will also have to do some recruiting.

“I’ll be getting into it right away,” he said. “As for recriuiting, I will have to familiarize myself with it. But I spend a lot of time scouting every year, and I’ve helped Tim (McMahon) out even then, giving him feedback and such. So I’m looking forward to it.”

Anna athletic director Mike Muehlfeld said the vacant postion has been posted internally at Anna and also on the Ohio High School Athletic Association website.
