The waterworks trustees contemplate putting in eight fire hydrants around the public square – one at each corner and one near each entrance. In case of a fire in the business blocks round the square it would be impossible to make use of some hydrants as they would probably be too close to the heat. It would be well enough to make this improvement without delay.

100 years

Wednesday, April 5, 1917

The Peoples Savings and Loan Association yesterday let the contract for the vault for the new building which is to be erected by the association. The contract was let to the Mosler Safe Co. of Hamilton. Final plans for the new building will cover the space occupied by the present building, including rooms formerly used by Bush Plumbing Co. and Laughlin Confectionery.

Word from Washington this afternoon indicates it will be late tonight or tomorrow before a vote will be reached on the Martin-Flood state of war resolution.

75 years

Wednesday, April 5, 1942

The third annual Easter Seal sale for crippled children, sponsored locally by the Sidney Rotary Club, will be brought to a close this weekend with an Easter lily parade on Saturday. The parade will include the sale of small paper lilies on the street corners and in public buildings.

Clyde Lamb, head of the physical education department at Ohio Northern University, will be the guest speaker, when the Anna community honors the high school basketball team on Wednesday evening, with a dinner in the school cafeteria. Fred Elsass will be the toastmaster.

50 years

FORT LORAMIE – Wayne Trail Tool and Die Co. broke ground Wednesday afternoon for a 10,000 square foot addition scheduled for completion July 1. Vern Vandenbrock, Paul Perin and Mel Puthoff are owners.

BOTKINS – Botkins High School senior Shawn C. Wilt has been named Teen-Ager of the Month by the Sidney Optimist Club. He has a 3.57 grade point average, has been named salutatorian of his class, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

The original building of Dorothy Love Retirement Community, Russell Hall, will be demolished this month since renovation and reuse of the building is not viable, said Daniel O’Connor, executive director. The decision was made to tear down Russell Hall due to the general condition of the building and no plans for its use, O’Connor said.

After seven months, Sidney City Schools officials are still awaiting word from the Ohio Department of Education on a decision concerning whether the offering of voluntary religious education classes to elementary school students is legal. Timothy Bickel, direct of curriculum for the Sidney City Schools, said Tuesday he has not heard from state officials concerning the issue. “It’s very interesting that it’s taken this long,” he said.
