The broom factory has moved its office from the Miami Avenue front of its property to that on Shelby Street.

Council at its meeting last night adopted a resolution instructing the mayor to order in sidewalks abutting certain lots along some of the streets on which sidewalks were recommended in a recent resolution. Notices are to be posted instructing property owners to put in sidewalks.

The Monarch Machine Tool Co. again broke all records for production during the month of March, when 230 lathes were shipped from the plant here. This was 16 more machines than were shipped the previous month. The plant is presently employing 221 men and new employees are being taken on each day.

A formal declaration of war against Germany is expected to be adopted tonight by the House of Representatives. The House opened debate on the resolution this morning, after it was adopted by the Senate last night by a vote of 82 to 6. The debate on the resolution is the Senate was long and hot.

Thursday, April 6, 1942

A windshield sticker instead of the present metal license plates probably will be used in 1943 to show registration of Ohio automobiles, Motor Vehicle Registrar Cylon Wallace said today. He said the state would not have enough steel to make the regular license plates.

Sidney School Superintendent C.C. Crawford said today that there is still an opportunity for enrollment in the second defense machine shop course open to anyone over 18 years of age. Twenty-three students recently completed a similar 12 weeks course at Sidney High School.

HOUSTON – The Houston United Church of Christ will rededicate its church at 10:30 a.m. services Sunday, April 16. The service will mark the completion of extensive re-furnishing in the sanctuary which cost about $8,000. Members of the 120-year-old church on Houston-Russia Road, just west of this village, dedicated an educational unit in June 1964.

“It is no longer a question about a vocational school. The only question now is: Who is going to be a part of it?” This was the challenge handed representatives from 35 school districts in a six-county area when plans for the Upper Miami Valley Joint Vocational School (UMVJVS) were unveiled at Greenville Friday night. Approximately 650 people from Shelby, Miami, Darke, Auglaize, Mercer and Champaign counties heard Dr. Byrl shoemaker, director of the Division of Vocational Education, State Department of Education.

Photo: Virginia Shaw shows the form that won her first place in a hula-hoop contest during a ’50s-‘60s dance sponsored by the Shelby County Humane Society. This marked the fourth consecutive year that Mrs. Shaw has won the contest.
