Arbor Day on Friday of next week will be an Arbor Day extraordinary in the schools of Ohio. The State School Commissioner has made a request that a vote be taken on that day for a state tree and a state flower. Every school pupil is entitled to vote. The results will be forward to the commissioner and the tree and flower receiving the highest vote will be named the state representative of forest and floriculture. The tree candidate of this paper is the Buckeye. For a floral emblem a choice will try all lovers of flowers.

Health Officer Frank Schlagetter issued a warning today that drastic measures will be taken by the board of health against those individuals who fail to observe the proclamation of the mayor calling for a general cleanup of the city.

Two husky Austrians got more than they bargained for when they tangled with Big “Jim” Briscoe at the Metropole Café shortly before closing time last night. The pair attacked Briscoe after he had assisted police in placing another foreigner in a taxi to be taken to the city lockup for drunkenness. He flattened the two attackers and then held them until police arrived back on the scene.

“Avon” one of the most attractive night clubs in the Miami Valley, is to be opened to the public on Saturday and Sunday nights, starting this weekend, it was announced today by William Ross Sr. and Willard Kauffman. First established 20 years ago, the club has been entirely renovated to make it one of the finest in this area.

Saturday, April 22, 1967

County Auditor Thelma Short signed her name 130 times this morning. The signatures were to the bonds issued for the construction and equipment of the proposed new Shelby County Home for the Aged, at a cost of $650,000. Each of the bonds is in the denomination of $5,000. The interest-bearing rate is 3 ¼ percent. Mrs. Short also had to list each of the $5,000 bonds in a register which contains the numbers, interest dates and date of maturity.

Membership in the Sidney Chamber of Commerce now stands at over 285, executive manager Frohman Johnson reported. Started in March, a membership drive recently ended resulting in 36 new members. A membership recruiting team headed by Ed Frey finished first, one led by Glen Phillips was second and Bob Hepler’s team was third.

Carrie Weaver, Sidney’s ace southpaw pitcher, hurled the fourth no-hitter of her impressive career Thursday and the first perfect game as she blanked Trotwood 10-0 in Greater Miami Valley Conference girl’s softball action. Miss Weaver struck out eight and did not allow a Trotwood runner to reach base in the game, which was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
