SIDNEY — A trio of people have been sentenced in Shelby County Common Pleas Court in a case involving theft and property destruction at the Sidney Walmart on Christmas Eve 2016.

Trevion Schutte, 20, at large, and Darious L. Bowles, 18, and Miranda J. Leach, 21, both of 736 Countryside Lane, were sentenced in cases recently handled by Shelby County Common Pleas Court Judge James Stevenson.

According to court records, Schutte joined with Bowles and Leach to steal merchandise from Walmart after the store had closed for the holiday.

Just before 6 p.m. that evening, Schutte entered the store and hid behind boxes on the shelf in the baby section of the store. After employees left for the evening, he caused approximately $1,000 in damage to glass cases housing equipment that he then stole. Officials estimated the loss of the items to be $18,000.

Upon leaving the store, Schutte was picked up by Bowles and Leach in the parking lot. After viewing the surveillance video, officers determined the trio was in the store shopping in planning the theft. Sidney Police identified the offenders and made arrests.

Recently, Schutte was placed on five years of community control on charges of grand theft and attempted vandalism. He was also assessed court costs. He remains held without bond at the Preble County Jail on a failure-to-appear-in-court charge in Eaton.

Bowles received 30 days in the Shelby County Jail on complicity to vandalism. He was also assessed court costs.

Leach was sentenced to five years of community control on a charge of complicity to grand theft for her involvement in planning the theft and driving Schutte from the scene. She must also complete the Thinking for Positive Change program.

The trio also agreed to pay restitution to Walmart in the amount of $15,000. The court also ordered the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse vehicle used in the crime to be forfeited.

• Kenneth A. Henderson, 28, 324 Shelby St., received 17 months in prison with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction on a count of trafficking in drugs. He received an additional 11 months in prison on three counts of trafficking in drugs. The sentences are to be served concurrently.
