Sidney Post 217 took one on the chin Wednesday night at Custenborder Field, getting routed by visiting Napoleon 13-2.
The loss left Sidney at 4-6 going into another home game Thursday night at Custenborder against Ottawa.
Napoleon wasted no time in establishing itself in Wednesday’s game, scoring six times in the top of the first inning, thanks in large part to two walks and two Sidney errors.
They added two more in the top of the second to make it 8-0 on a walk, a double, another error and a single.
Sidney got one of its runs in the fourth. Keaton McEldowney doubled and scored on a throwing error.
But Napoleon came back with four more runs in the top of the sixth on a walk, a single, an error and a double.
Sidney’s last run came in the bottom of the sixth on singles by CJ Billing and Zach White and a sacrifice fly by Daniel Berning.
Sidney was only outhit in the game by a 9-8 count, but was unable to overcome seven errors and seven bases on balls.
“Both those things are uncharacteristic for this team,” said coach Jim Koewler. “Napoleon always has a good team and this year is no exception. Against teams like that, you have to make the routine plays and limit your mistakes and we didn’t do that.
“But this is the first game we’ve had like this so I’m not too worried about it,” he added. “We still have a lot of ball to play and we will be all right in the end.”
McEldowney led Post 217 at the plate, with two doubles and a single.
