Illegal immigrants taken into custody

SIDNEY — Four illegal Mexican immigrants are in custody following a crash on Monday evening.

Betsi Anai Vargas Flores, 28, is being held on charges at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office after rear-ending another vehicle at the intersection of Jackson Road and state Route 29 in Perry Township. She has no driver’s licence or insurance on the vehicle that is owned by another person.

Eglain Lopez-Camey, 23, Toni Maori Lopez-Camey, 24, and Oberto Lopez-Perez, 22, were taken into Federal custody in Butler County.

Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart said the group was living in the Springfield/Columbus area, but worked at Freshway Foods in Sidney and was on their way home at the time of the crash. He said one person was in charge of holding everyone’s personal cards/paperwork, which indicates a human trafficking situation.

Lenhart said the local resident driver of the other vehicle was seriously hurt in the crash, and one of Flores’ passengers suffered minor injuries.

Perry Port Salem Rescue, Port Jefferson Fire Department, CareFlight, Sidney Medics and Fire Department and Deputies responded to the scene.

Although Flores had no legal documents, Lenhart said she did have a food card and a WIC card in her name.

“I understand employers need employees, and hats off to people who want to come to our country for a better life, but we need to get a grip on this immigration. It’s a mess,” Lenhart said. “You and I as tax payers pay for all of that.”
