Commissioners renew sales tax

SIDNEY — Shelby County commissioners voted to renew the county’s 1/2 percent sales tax for another five years.

The action was taken during a regular meeting of the commission, June 20. The commissioners had invited input from voters at two hearings on the issue and got no response. Tuesday, they briefly discussed whether to make the tax permanent, but in the end, decided on the five-year renewal, because, as Commissioner Julie Ehemann noted, “sometimes things change.”

In other recent business, the commissioners:

• Approved a proposal by Midwest Maintenance Inc. to do exterio repairs to the annex building. The agreement is for $42,270.

• Approved an enterprise zone agreement with the village of Fort Loramie and Wayne Trail Technologies Inc.

• Approved a petition to vacate a portion of county Road 208 in McLean Township.

• Authorized the issuance of revenue bonds not to exceed $511,000 for the Newport sanitary sewer project.

• Opened three bids and award a contract in the amount of $97,935.76 for the Staley Road-widening project to Ticon Paving Inc., of Piqua.

• Awarded a contract in the amount of $2,674,891 for the Newport sewer facility project to Tom’s Construction Inc., of St. Henry.

• Convened hearings concerning the renewal of a 1/2 percent sales tax.

• Awarded a contract to Garmann/Miller and Associates for architectural services for a transitional housing facility to be constructed near the Shelby County Jail.
