PIQUA — In a battle of teams undefeated in Western Ohio League play, the Sidney Post 217 legion baseball team came away with a 5-3 win over Piqua Post 184 Tuesday at Hardman Field.

Piqua got on the scoredboard first with two runs on a pair of singles, a walk and a stolen base in the bottom of the first inninng.

Sidney would cut that lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning on a pair of singles sandwiched around a stolen base.

Post 217 would tie the game in the top of the fourth on three singles. In the top of the fifth, Sidney would take its first lead of the game, 3-2, on a single and a hit-and-run double.

Piqua would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After the first two Piqua batters singled, the next hitter put down a sacrifice bunt, which Sidney misplayed by making a throwing error to first base, with the ball going all the way to the fence down the rightfield line. This allowed one runner to score and tie the game.

Piqua ran itself out a potentially much bigger inning, however, as the runner who had been on first tried to score and was thrown out at the plate, then the batter was caught trying to advance to third and thrown out, ending the inning for Post 184.

Sidney would score the game-winning run — and add an insurance run — in the top of the ninth inning on a pair of walks, a single and a sacrifice fly.

With the win, Sidney improved to 3-0 in league play, while Piqua fell to 3-1 in league play.

Piqua host the Express Wednesday night in a game that was not finished in time for this edition. Piqua hosts Springfield Legion in a doubleheader Friday.
