July 3, 1892

The United States Court in Indianapolis has issued an order to the receiver of the American Wheel Co. to sell at private sale up to noon on July 20, all of the property he can, and at 3 p.m. that same day to offer at public sale all that is left. Plants in nine cities are to be sold, including the one in Sidney.

There is reason to think that the council will make no mistake if it is very deliberate in granting a franchise to the Central Union Telephone Co. There is a certain demand for telephones. It should be supplied, but when council give it aid it should be in endorsing the best system for the city at the lowest cost.

100 Years

July 3, 1917

At the hearing before the conservancy court in Dayton yesterday all of the objections filed by Shelby county residents were overruled. They have the right of appeal. Still awaiting a final decision is the case of Louis H. Orr, of Miami County, for an injunction against assessments of all Miami Valley property for flood protection.

A county auxiliary medical defense committee has been named to cooperate with the state and national committee on medical preparedness. Members of the committee are: A.B. Gudenkauf, M.D.; Arthur Silver, M.D.; A.W. Reddish, M.D.; O.O. LeMaster, M.D., and M.F. Hussey, M.D.

The ladies of the United Brethren Missionary Society will have an all-day picnic meeting on Thursday at the old saw mill grounds at the junction of North Ohio avenue and the Wapakoneta pike. In case of rain, the meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. H.G. Henley, on St. Marys avenue.

75 Years

July 3, 1942

Although no decision has yet been reached by Shelby County Fair officials, a substantial number of Ohio’s 92 county and independent fairs will probably be held this year despite the appeal of Joseph Eastman, national defense transportation director.

Mrs. E.H. Morrison, Miss Dorothy Morrison, and Miss Grace Woodruff were in Cincinnati yesterday to attend the presentation of the opera “La Traviata” in the summer opera series.

50 Years

July 3, 1967

A new full time director of religious education has been hired by the Sidney First United Methodist Church. Miss Linda Hicks, 22, of Pittsburgh, is due to arrive in Sidney and take up her duties Aug. 15. Miss Hicks will be responsible for youth programs and for development of courses for teachers and workers in the church school.

MINSTER – Elaine Olding, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Olding of 16 North Garfield street, received top honors and was valedictorian of her graduating class at St. Elizabeth Hospital school of nursing, Dayton. The class graduated Sunday at the National Cash Register auditorium, in that city.

25 Years

July 3, 1992

There has been a major sheep kill in the county. Deputy Dog Warden Jayne Watkins reported dogs killed thirteen sheep and injured eight more sheep in northern Shelby County. Two German shepherds were identified. No information has been obtained concerning the owner of the dogs. Per state law, the county is responsible for paying the owner. Reimbursement will be made to the owner of the sheep based upon the values of the sheep established by the most recent auction at the Shelby County Fair.

There has been union organizing activity in Shelby County. Representatives of Teamster Local 114 of Cincinnati have been picketing out at Copeland Corporation. The dispute involves truck drivers who are members of the Local 114 in Cincinnati. These trucks have been hauling Copeland freight. The pickets are from Cincinnati and represent the union. No members of the Copeland IUE union are involved.
