MAPLEWOOD — Six people riding in a horse-drawn buggy on state Route 47 in northern Shelby County were transported to the hospital in Sidney following a collision with a car, Thursday, July 6.

According to a report issued by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Friday morning, the buggy was operated by Jacob Schwartz, 49, of Maplewood. It was eastbound on state Route 47, just west of the Logan County line.

A vehicle operated by Nicholas Emerich, 31, of Bellefontaine, also eastbound on state Route 47, struck the rear of the buggy in the 22000 block of state Route 47. Emerich said he failed to see the buggy ahead of him. The impact forced the buggy off the right side of the road, ejecting the passengers. The crash, at about 10:13 a.m., split the buggy into two pieces.

Schwartz, his wife, Rosa, and four children ranging in age from 1 to 9 were all injured. All were taken to Wilson Health by area emergency personnel. One child was later transferred to Dayton Children’s Hospital with serious injuries, according to the report.

The horse sustained minor scrapes and was taken into the care of friends of the owners. Emerich was not injured.

Emergency medical services units responded to the scene from Anna, Sidney, Perry-Port Salem and Indian Lake. Fire personnel aslo assisting at the scene were from Port Jefferson and Maplewood Fire departments.

“At this time, speed, alcohol or texting and driving do not appear to be factors in this crash,” the sheriff’s office report said.

The accident is still under investigation.
