Troy Kids Triathlon set for Sunday

TROY — The Troy Kids Triathlon is celebrating its ninth year, Sunday, July 16, as children 4-14 swim, run and bike their way to the finish line to benefit local children in need.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with a swim at the Troy Aquatic Park, and bike ride in the Hobart Arena parking lot and bike path, and finishes with a run at Troy Memorial Stadium.

All proceeds benefit CASA/GAL of Miami County, an organization that works for the abused and neglected children of Miami County.

Director of CASA/GAL of Miami County Jennifer Sanders said the proceeds from the races “help us with our mission to serve our children.”

The triathlon began in 2009 when Cheryl Chaney approached Sanders about the children’s triathlon to benefit the children’s advocacy organization.

“Cheryl takes care of everything — the registrations, the course mapping — then she donates any of the proceeds of the event back to CASA,” Sanders said.

The need for CASA/GAL volunteers is rising as the case load increases each year due to drug addiction and its affect on children.

Half-way through 2017, CASA/GAL of Miami County has 137 children who are receiving services from the organization. In 2016, 152 children were served and Saunders anticipates exceeding that number before the end of this year.

“The funds from this help us with our mission to recruit, train, retain and educate our volunteers to be able to serve these children. With our growing numbers in caseload, obviously it takes more funds to be able to service all the kids,” Sanders said.

Volunteers are trained to be court appointed special advocates who work on behalf of the child in court proceedings and advocate in the best interest of the child.

Approximately 304 children participated in the annual Kids Triathlon last year. Approximately 120 children who participated were from Miami County and the rest were from outside of the area, including Columbus, Cincinnati and even a child from Texas. The event also has approximately 100 volunteers to assist children throughout the course.

Registration is $20 per participant, with additional siblings in the same family $15 each. Register online at www.speedy-feet.com. For more information, contact Cheryl Chaney at (937) 216-3078 or email at [email protected]. Same day registration is available. All children must wear a helmet.
