SIDNEY — A Thursday afternoon fire is estimated to have caused approximately $5,000 in damages to a house and its contents.

At 12:46 p.m., Sidney Fire Department and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to 2278 W. Russell Road on the report of smoke coming from the basement of the one-story residence.

Sidney Fire Deputy Chief Cameron Haller said the building had been evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival. They were able to pull one hose line to make entry and contained the fire to the crawl space. He said the fire was extinguished quickly.

Firefighters also removed all of the fire-damaged material from the residence, Haller said.

Sidney received mutual aid of the Anna, Fort Loramie, Van Buren Township and Kettlersville fire departments.

DP&L was called to the scene to secure the electric lines.

The fire was accidental, caused by a faulty dehumidifier.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters during the incident.
