A company of young ladies, organized some time ago under the leadership of Capt. Purnell, have been drilling the art of military tactics. The young girls have gained much proficiency in their work for the short time they have been at it and they bid fair to become rivals.

Charles Benjamin made a trip to Bellefontaine yesterday on his bicycle and returned today by train.

100 years ago

Saturday, Aug. 5, 1917

The North Street river bridge is thought by many people to be unsafe. The damage is believed to have resulted from the 1913 flood. With the increased use of the bath beach at that location and many people standing on the bridge, it is considered a hazard.

Members of the Sidney Board of Education at their meeting last night adopted changes recommended by the recent General Assembly, recognizing the junior high school as including the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, with the senior high school to include the 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

75 years ago

Saturday, Aug. 5, 1942

The annual reunion of Co. L. and Spanish War Veterans was held yesterday at the Karl Young cottage in Port Jefferson. The 37 present was the largest number to attend in several years. The meeting followed a dinner served at the Lawrence Hussey club house. Officers re-elected include: J.L. Frazier, president; H.E. Kah, secretary; L.P. Kraft, George Ehrhardt, and Karl Young, entertainment committee.

Saturday, Aug. 5, 1967

The first religious profession for Leon Monnin will be at St. Charles Seminary, Carthegena, Aug. 15. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Monnin of Russia. After his profession he will spend a short vacation with his parents. At the conclusion of the visit, he will return to St. Charles to being six years of preparation for the priesthood.

Saturday, Aug. 5, 1992

Things literally have not been the same in the Sidney office of the Soil and Water Conservation Service since the retirement of Maxine Allen. She was the first secretary hired by the office since it was started, and recently retired after serving the office for 32 years.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Supporters of a constitutional amendment to limit the terms of politicians hoped their measure would appear first among statewide issues on the Nov. 3 ballot. But it will be second. The amendment would limit to eight years the consecutive terms of state representatives, state senators, statewide elected officials, and members of the U.S. House. U.S. senators would be limited to two, six-year terms.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) – The U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championships began Friday, with city officials hoping it marked the start of a profitable three-year run for the event in Middletown. The 10-day annual competition attracts at least 200 balloonists, their families, sponsors and visitors. City officials hope for attendance of 400,000 people and an economic impact of $10 million on the region.
