Fire destroys barn, contents

FORT LORAMIE — A fire engulfed and destroyed a barn Friday afternoon at 8183 Hoying Road in Turtle Creek Township.

According to Fort Loramie Fire Chief Tim Siegel, the barn was owned by Dave Hoying, who lives down the road from the residence. His son, Tony Hoying, and his family, live at the residence.

“The cause of the fire is undetermined because there’s so much damage,” said Siegel. “It’s not a suspicious fire.”

Siegel said the fire was discovered when Hoying’s children went to the barn to feed the calves that were housed there.

“They went out to feed the cows before supper,” said Siegel. “They came back into the house and said the barn was on fire.”

Siegel said 14 calves were saved and one was lost in the fire. The heat of the fire damaged the siding on the house.

“The family can still live there,” said Siegel.

Siegel said a skid loader, 7,000 bales of straw and three grain wagons were in the barn and lost in the fire. He’s estimating the fire caused more than $100,000 worth of damage to the barn and its contents.

“No one was injured in the fire,” said Siegel.

In addition to Fort Loramie Fire, other agencies responding to assist with the three-alarm fire were Anna Fire, Jackson Center Fire, Van Buren Township Fire, Chickasaw Fire, Sidney Fire, Minster Fire Jaws of Life, New Bremen Fire and New Knoxville Fire. Fort Loramie Rescue was also dispatched to the scene.
