Yesterday William Shine received from Dublin, Ireland, two casks of A. Guiness’ Sons Co.’s celebrated brown stout porter. This is one of the most famous malt liquors in the world.

Monday, Aug. 14, 1917

Considerable excitement resulted yesterday afternoon, when smoke was seen coming from the basement of the Purity Confectionery at the corner of Poplar Street and Ohio Avenue. Investigation revealed that the Delco farm lighting plant recently installed by the owner, Evans Johnson, was on fire. A clerk had put chocolate syrup instead of oil in the unit.

75 years ago

Monday, Aug. 14, 1942

Fingerprints and photos of an elderly man of foreign descent are being taken by Sheriff Pitts to send to the FBI for federal inspection. Either Polish or Russian, the man was found wandering in a corn field south of Sidney several days ago. He was questioned in Russian by Mrs. Harry Wain, but little information could be obtained from him.

Monday, Aug. 14, 1967

Mrs. Marion Russell, editor of Coin World, received the American Numismatic Association’s medal of merit at the ANA’s 76th anniversary convention last week at the Americana Hotel, Miami Beach, Fla. Mrs. Russell was accorded the high honor by the world’s largest collector organization “in recognition of distinguished service to the association and to the science of numismatics.”

Monday, Aug. 14, 1992

CAMDEN, Ohio (AP) – Federal, state and local authorities Saturday began harvesting of about 100,000 marijuana plants at a 10-acre site near this Preble County community in southwest Ohio. “This is just astronomical – a big, big crop. It could rank in the top 10 nationwide,” said John Lenhart, superintendent of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification.
