Klute’s Band, which has rendered very delightful music at their weekly concerts, gave their last regular concert last evening. The band has appreciated the crowds that came to hear them, fully as much as the listeners appreciated their music.

Thursday, Aug. 17, 1917

Earl Lee, owner of the Lee Liquor Store, has announced his intention of going out of the business. High market prices soaring upward, war prohibition and war taxes are given as reasons for the ending of this old establishment. The store was established in 1891 and has been managed by Earl Lee since 1901.

75 years ago

Thursday, Aug. 17, 1942

Shelby County Sheriff Truman Pitts warned county residents today that he will see that the 40 mile speed limit is enforced. Pitts said he had received a request for his cooperation from the Office of Price Administration. The speed limit has been set to conserve tires.

“The greatest victory yet achieved” against the Japanese has been won by the United States forces in the Solomon Islands, a London, England, newspaper reported today. The Solomon victories are said to represent the fulfillment of the first phase of an offensive attack upon the long line of Japanese island bases north of Australia.

Thursday, Aug. 17, 1967

FORT LORAMIE – A committee of St. Michael Church members and Rev. John Brucker are looking over three sets of plans for a new community center here. Plans are in the making for a $125,000 structure to be located on a lot formerly occupied by the Albers Lumber Co.

Thursday, Aug. 17, 1992

Photo: Mitchell McElroy, sales service representative of VisionMark Inc. of Sidney, holds a sign that includes braille wording for the visually handicapped. McElroy said the braille signs have been selling well since the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act earlier this year. The act requires the installation of braille signs in public buildings.
