SIDNEY — Sidney scored two goals in the second half to pull away to a 4-1 victory over Lehman in a season opener on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Jalen Hudgins scored two goals for the Yellow Jackets while Damien Jones and Evan Burden each scored one goal off of assists by Mason Page. Sidney took a 2-0 lead by halftime, but Lehman’s Jake Emrick opened the second half with a goal off an assist from Michael Denning to narrow the deficit for awhile.

Sidney coach Jamie Fridley said it was a good start to the season.

“We still have some things to work on before we get into conference play,” Fridley said. “Lehman was a good test for us, because they are a cross-town rival with players that we know. We did work on our possession, which is one of the areas that we wanted to clean up.”

Lehman coach Tom Wiseman said the team played better after some lineup adjustments at halftime.

“At the end, we just didn’t have the roster size and experience to hang,” Wiseman said. “Our boys played well and they have nothing to be ashamed of. While the score wasn’t what we wanted, the work rate was there and we stayed in it as long as we could. We were missing one starter and a couple of our key players were playing hurt. We ran out of fresh legs.”

Sidney hosts West Carrollton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, while Lehman hosts Fairlawn at 5.

Cincinnati Maderia 2, Lehman 0

A rematch of a district final game from last season lived up to the hype. After a 0-0 score at halftime, Maderia scored two goals in the second half to earn a win in a season opener.

Maderia first scored with four minutes left in the second half off of a failed clearance on a corner kick.

“That goal was a real dagger as we really believed that the second half was going to be our half,” Lehman coach Jeremy Lorenzo said. “Madeira was really amped after that and we found ourselves on our heals trying to survive.”

Halfway through the second half, Madeira’s Natalie Heisser scored her second goal to go up 2-0.

“We just got caught in a counter attack and our center back got isolated,” Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo said it was fast paced and physical game and was a good learning experience for the team.

“We were pretty disappointed after the game as we really wanted that game,” Lorenzo said. “However, it was a hard fought match and we played hard to the last second. We made some mistakes and will learn from them. It’s never fun taking a loss but our season goals are all still in tact.”
