PIQUA — The children and the staff at the Miami County YMCA Alexander/Davis Childcare Center recently grew sunflowers from seeds, then transplanted the plants to the grounds around the center.
This was an opportunity to teach the children about the life cycle of plants and what they need to grow.
The flowers also were grown in memory of teacher Amy Carity’s late mother, Carol, who fought a courageous battle with cancer and passed away this spring. Sunflowers were Carol’s favorite flower.
When one person’s love of nature is shared with others, it can bring joy to all ages. Carol Carity planted sunflowers in her yard, at the family business, and in others’ yards as a wonderful surprise. An array of sunflowers in Piqua this summer have been planted and grown in her memory. The sunflower seeds were given to family and friends who attended Carol’s memorial service.
The children were excited to watch the flowers grow. The sunflowers have brought much joy and smiles to the center’s staff, families, and people passing by.
