Area football roundup: Lehman, Fort Loramie get big wins

DOLA — Elliott Gilardi completed four passes on Friday night, which was more than enough to lift Lehman Catholic to another big Northwest Central Conference win.

Lehman crushed Hardin Northern 63-0 to improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the NWCC.

Gilardi completed 4-of-5 passing attempts in the game for 162 yards. His four completions were all touchdown passes in the first half.

Gilardi threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Barhorst, a 35-yard and 41-yard pass to Owen Smith, and a 57-yard pass to Kameron Lee. Gilardi also ran for a 1-yard touchdown, and Smith scored the game’s opening touchdown on a 40-yard run.

Smith ran for touchdowns of 13 and two yards in the third quarter, and RJ Bertini capped off Lehman’s scoring on a 75-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Smith had 95 rushing yards on eight carries. Lehman had 353 yards of offense in the game, while the Polar Bears had 71. Hardin Northern had 28 carries in the game and finished with -10 rushing yards.

Lehman (5-1, 3-0 NWCC) plays against Waynesfield-Goshen next Friday at Alexander Stadium in Piqua.

Fort Loramie 46, Twin Valley South 0

Max Hoying scored early and often to lift Fort Loramie to a big Cross County Conference win on Friday night.

Hoying scored on a 7-yard run with about seven minutes left in the first quarter, which gave the Redskins an 8-0 lead after a two-point conversion. He scored a short touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter, then added another TD run late in the quarter after an interception to extend the lead to 24-0.

Austin Siegel threw a touchdown pass to Hoying with 1:45 left to extend the lead to 32-0, which was the score at halftime. Hoying scored again midway through the third quarter, and Weston Rittenhouse capped off Loramie’s scoring on a run in the fourth quarter.

The Redskins improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCC with the win. They travel to Mississinawa Valley next Friday.

Marion Local 32, Anna 7

The Flyers scored the first two touchdowns of the game to take a lead they didn’t lose against the Rockets (5-1) in a Midwest Athletic Conference game on Friday.

Henry Keller and Jack Buening scored on short touchdown runs for Marion Local. Bart Bixler threw a touchdown pass to Austin Fogt to cut the Flyers’ lead to 13-7, but Nate Bruns threw a 10-yard touchdown pass before halftime to extend the lead to 19-7. Buening added two touchdown runs in the second half.

Fogt caught three passes in the game for 47 yards while Caleb Kauffman caught seven passes for 36 yards. The Flyers had 278 yards of offense in the game, while Anna had 196. The Rockets lost two fumbles and had one interception, while Marion Local lost one fumble. Wyatt Bensman led Anna’s defense with six tackles.

The Rockets, who travel to St. Henry next week, dropped to 3-1 in the MAC with the loss.

Delphos St. John’s 61, New Bremen 28

St. John’s jumped out to a 21-0 lead and ran away late in a MAC game on Friday.

Troy Schwinnen returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to get the Blue Jays started. St. John’s scored the first five touchdowns of the game, but New Bremen scored three times in the second quarter. The Cardinals scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Nolan Bornhorst to Avery Powers, an 86-yard return by Powers, and a 15-yard pass from Bornhorst to Powers.

New Bremen cut the lead to 42-28 on a 20-yard pass from Bornhorst to Caleb Alig in the third quarter, but the Blue Jays put the game away by scoring the last three touchdowns.

St. John’s had 453 yards of offense in the game, while New Bremen had 300. Bornhorst threw for 168 yards and ran for 43, while Powers ran for 75 and had 76 receiving yards on four catches. Zach Flaute led New Bremen with 9.5 tackles.

New Bremen (3-3, 1-3 MAC) hosts Marion Local next Friday.

Versailles 35, Fort Recovery 14

Versailles broke a four-game losing streak with a win over Fort Recovery on Friday night in a Midwest Athletic Conference game.

Versailles was led by Kurtis Rutschilling with 139 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Rutschilling also had an interception and a fumble recovery.

“Kurtis had a hell of a night,” Versailles coach Adam Miller said. “He runs hard and all the guys blocking for him… it was a good thing going.”

The Tigers started the scoring after George Grow blocked an Indian punt, which was recovered by Tyler Henry at the 3-yard line. Rutschilling scored on a 3-yard run with 6:51 left in the first.

Versailles made it 14-0 on a Noah Grisez 5-yard run in the second quarter.

Fort Recovery would get on the board with a touchdown pass with two minutes left in the half.

The Indians then got the ball back with 1:14 left in the half. The Tigers were forced to punt from their own 30, but a punt by Josh Steinbrunner pinned the Indians at their own 1-yard line.

Fort Recovery took its opening possession of the second half to the Versailles 10-yard line before a forced fumble was recovered by the Tigers. A 90-yard drive was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Grow with under four minutes to go in the third quarter.

The Tigers took a 28-7 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by Rutschilling, which he set up with a 54-yard run.

Fort Recovery’s Will Homan followed his biggest run of the night, going 55 yards for a touchdown to cut the Tigers’ lead to 14 points. Rutschilling then closed out the game on a 15-yard touchdown run with 6:42 left.

Versailles had four sacks, two from AJ Ahrens. The Tigers also forced two turnovers.

Fort Recovery outgained the Tigers 310 yards to 299. Homan rushed for 218 yards on 25 carries.

“Fort Recovery’s running game is very, very good,” Miller said. “I thought we did a good job containing them and did what we needed to do to get the win.”

Versailles (2-4, 1-3 MAC) travels to Parkway on Friday.

St. Henry 30, Minster 7

The Wildcats scored the game’s first touchdown on a 6-yard run by Jared Huelsman, but the Redskins scored twice before halftime and added two touchdowns and a field goal in the second half to put the game away.

Huelsman finished with 103 rushing yards and 61 passing yards. St. Henry had 318 yards of offense in the game, while Minster had 187.

Minster (3-3, 1-3 MAC) plays at Coldwater next Friday.

Riverside 48, Waynesfield-Goshen 6

It was the third consecutive lopsided NWCC win for the Pirates, who improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
