Cattlemen’s Camp set for Oct. 14-15

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is holding a “Cattlemen’s Camp” on Oct. 14-15 at the Madison County Fairgrounds in London, Ohio. Cattlemen’s Camp is open to all beef youth and family participation is encouraged. Yes, anybody showing cattle is invited to attend!

At this two-day event, you have the opportunity to learn day-to-day care of your cattle project as well as gain showmanship and clipping experience and learn about the cattle industry. Breakout sessions will be offered tailored to age-specific groups.

Camp participants are encouraged to bring their calves along for “hands-on” experience but it is not “required” for participants to bring a calf. Families have the option to bring one calf per kid or one calf per family.

In addition to the sessions on cattle care, showmanship, and leadership, there will be fun with a tailgate on Saturday evening! This weekend is designed for the entire family! If you’re interested, you can take your camper to the event, or you can book rooms at the Holiday Inn in New London. Visit https://www.ohiocattle.org/Youth/cattlemens-camp for more information and access to the registration form. The deadline to register is Oct. 1.

Last week was busy! Monday morning started with one of James’ calves in the corn field instead of the new grazing section. With help from Kimberly and all the kids, we got Bubba back in … and then I re-did fence so there would be electric to that new area.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday was Farm Science Review! I was only there about four hours on Tuesday. It was a bit chilly and the rain just “poured!” The ground was already wet and this made it worse! There was water everywhere! (Of course, I left my umbrella in the car, so I was soaked, too!)

Stanley, James, the two oldest girls, and I went down Wednesday. The parking lot was a mud hole! Schlop everywhere, especially at the entrance!! We spent most of the day at the Gwynne Conservation Area: sessions on Aquaponics, Hydroponics, and Pasture Renovation. Always looking for ideas …

The girls did really well at the Ag Safety “tabletop hazard hunt.” They found a lot of the safety hazards … even some that I overlooked! Of course, Genevieve had to bring to my attention the “extra rider on the tractor” because she’s heard that I’ve done that … (I wonder where/when! Someday I’ll share the “Five on One Tractor” story from my youth!)

Then, on Thursday, I was there by 7:30 a.m. to work information displays. The parking area was still torn up, but not as wet as Wednesday. The weather was nice, but it was hot! Amazing what one week in the middle of September can bring!

Well, I think it’s safe to say that “Field Day Season” is over. Coming up on your “To Do” list is harvest. As always, it’s time to think “safety.” Safety around equipment, safety on the road! Drivers: Watch for those Slow Moving Vehicle emblems and slow down! Farmers: Make sure you’re doing all you can to be visible! Please be safe!
