Tuesday roundup: Sidney volleyball can’t keep up streak against Troy

SIDNEY — Sidney put up a fight against division-leading Troy in the third set on Tuesday but lost its first match since late August.

Troy beat the Yellow Jackets 25-10, 25-12 and 26-24 to improve to 15-4 overall and 12-0 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference American North Division. Sidney won 12 consecutive matches before Tuesday’s loss, which is the longest winning streak for the program since the school joined the GWOC.

Sidney (12-6) is 8-4 in the division and in third place behind Troy and Tippecanoe (12-1). The Yellow Jackets travel to Tippecanoe on Friday night.

Arielle Snider battled for eight kills at the net on Tuesday, and Emily Tolbert and Ally Spangler each added four. Snider recorded two solo blocks. Payton Boshears led the defense with 15 digs and Allie Herrick picked up nine. Abby Nuss served two aces. Carrie Nuss directed the offense with 18 assists, setting 79-of-81.

Carrie Nuss has 1,369 career assists after Tuesday’s game. She broke the school’s previous all-time assists record earlier this season. Boshears is second in the GWOC in aces (56) and is 11th in digs (202). Snider is sixth in the conference in blocks (42).

Fort Loramie 3, Houston 0

The Redskins beat Houston 25-12, 25-11 and 25-13 in a Shelby County Athletic League match on Tuesday.

Marissa Meiring had a team-high 13 kills for Fort Loramie, while Alexis Fleckenstein had eight and Abby Holthaus and Kenzie Hoelscher had seven each. Sophia Albers had 35 assists and 14 digs, while Emily Austin and Chloe Stang had 12 digs each.

Sarah Monnier led Houston with eight kills and had six digs. Mariah Booher had six kills, and Olivia Bowser had one kill and nine digs. Alyssa Kemp had 15 assists and five digs, while Amber Stangel had 12 digs and Hannah Bixler had 10 digs.

Fort Loramie (11-8, 8-2 SCAL) hosts Jackson Center on Thursday. The Redskins will honor their eight seniors before the match.

Loramie is tied for first in the league with Anna, while Jackson Center and Russia are tied for second.

Jackson Center 3, Fairlawn 0

Jackson Center beat the Jets 25-7, 25-12 and 25-10 in an SCAL match on Tuesday.

Raquel Kessler led the Tigers with 16 kills, while Caroline Frieders had 14 assists and five kills. Frieders and Kessler each had four aces. Katie Sosby had 16 digs, Elizabeth Hickey had five kills, Connor Pipke had six digs and Madilynn Platfoot had nine assists.

Lauren Dudgeon had six kills and seven digs for Fairlawn, while MaCalla Huelskamp had two aces and five digs. Brittany Strunk had six assists and two digs, while Kenedde Gallimore had 12 digs and Lauren Weinschenk had seven digs.

Jackson Center (13-6, 7-3) travels to Fort Loramie on Thursday, while Fairlawn (4-14, 1-9) hosts Russia.

Russia 3, Botkins 0

The Raiders beat Botkins 25-10, 25-15 and 25-14 on Tuesday.

Laurissa Poling and Ashely Scott each had 11 kills for Russia, while Morgan Wenrick had five kills. Poling had 16 digs and four aces and Jenna Cordonnier had 27 assists and nine digs. Whitney Pleiman had 18 digs and five aces, Cameo Wilson had four kills and Claudia Counts had three aces.

Danielle Schwartz led Botkins with 20 digs and Brielle Boroff had nine assists.

Russia (13-7, 7-3) plays next on Thursday at Fairlawn, while Botkins (6-14, 3-8) hosts Anna.

Marion Local 3, Anna 0

Marion Local beat the Rockets 25-6, 25-19 and 25-22 on Tuesday in a nonconference match.

Macy Wiktorowski led Anna with nine kills. Lexi Wells had 14 assists, Lindsey Barhorst had seven digs and Rachel Shoemaker had six digs.

Anna (13-7, 8-2 SCAL) travels to Botkins on Thursday.

New Bremen 3, Lehman Catholic 0

The Cardinals beat Lehman 25-11, 25-8 and 25-9 on Tuesday in a nonconference match.

Paige Jones had 15 kills and 14 digs for New Bremen, while Rachel Kremer had six kills and Julia Goettemoeller and Claire Pape each had five kills. Pape led the team with 22 assists while Abbi Thieman had 11. Blake Snider had seven digs. Taylor Paul led the team with five aces.

New Bremen (14-1, 5-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) plays next at home on Thursday against Parkway.

Riverside 3, Lima Temple Christian 0

The Pirates beat Temple Christian 25-21, 25-16 and 25-14 on Tuesday to improve to 15-3 overall.

Marissa Davis led Riverside with 10 kills and six solo blocks, while Shelby Giles had six kills and Sierra Snow had 12 assists.

Boys Soccer

Sidney 1, Vandalia-Butler 0

Thomas Atwood scored a goal in the first five minutes of the game off a pass from Nathan Miu to lift Sidney to a win on Tuesday in a GWOC American North match.

It was Butler’s first loss in divisional play this season. Sidney coach Jamie Fridley credited the Yellow Jackets’ defense for holding down the Aviators after jumping out early.

“This was by far our best win against a quality opponent this year,” Fridley said. “… We held off a very talented Butler team for 75 minutes. Our entire defense played outstanding the whole game from the backs to the midfielders. This was definitely a team win that we needed going into the tournament seeding on Sunday.”

Sidney improved to 7-6-2 overall and 6-3-0 in the North with the win, while Butler fell to 8-2-3 and 6-1-1. The Yellow Jackets close out regular season play next Tuesday at Greenville before opening tournament play in two weeks.

Botkins 2, Twin Valley South 2

Zach Ware scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to help Botkins tie Twin Valley South in a nonleague match on Tuesday.

Botkins (7-2-3) travels to Lima Central Catholic (6-4-2) on Thursday night in a crucial Western Ohio Soccer League game. The Trojans are in second place in the WOSL with a 5-1-1 league record, while Central Catholic is in third at 5-2-1.

Miami East 8, Lehman Catholic 2

Lehman Catholic dropped a nonconference contest against the Vikings on Tuesday night in Sidney. Jake Emrick scored two goals, and Ethan Potts and Michael Denning tallied one assist each.

Miami East had a 2-0 lead at halftime, and Lehman coach Tom Wiseman knew something was off.

“That was the worst mental effort this team has registered this year,” Wiseman said. “Their minds were somewhere else besides soccer.”

The Cavaliers (6-5-1) return to action on Thursday when they travel to Temple Christian for a key WOSL game. Lehman is in first in the league with a 6-0-1 record, while Temple Christian (8-4-1, 4-2-0 WOSL) is tied for fifth.

“We talked for a while after this one,” Wiseman said. “The boys will be ready for Temple.”

West Liberty-Salem 4, Jackson Center 2

Gavin Booser and Bryce Sosby scored Jackson Center’s goals in Tuesday’s nonconference match, while Bryce Carter added an assist.

Jackson Center (6-3-3, 4-0-3 WOSL) hosts New Knoxville on Friday.

Girls Soccer

Sidney 8, Vandalia Butler 0

Khia McMillen scored three goals, Elaine Wiesenmayer scored two goals and MaKayla Dillinger, Emma Dahlinghaus and Megan Heckler scored one goal each in Tuesday’s lopsided GWOC American North game.

Wiesenmayer had four assists, and McMillen, Dillinger, Dahlinghaus, and Soleil Drinnen had one assist each.

Wiesenmayer reached 28 goals on the year in the game, which is a new school record. She also reached 18 assists on the season, which is a new school record.

Goalie Carly Dean recorded her seventh shutout of the year against Butler and had seven saves.

Sidney (10-2-2, 6-1-1 GWOC North) plays next on Monday at Fairborn.
