GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman freshman and Sidney alum Celena Taborn was been named Southern Conference Player of the Week for her strong play in three games last week.

Taborn, a 6-foot-3 forward, averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds in three games this past week, which included her collegiate starting debut that saw her register 19 points and a season-high 18 rebounds in Furman’s 58-57 victory over Chattanooga.

Taborn, who leads the SoCon in field goal percentage (.620), drained 19-of-31 shots, 10-of-19 free throws, and claimed 36 rebounds in 60 total minutes of action over the three games. She also blocked four shots, recorded a pair of assists, and was credited with a steal.

She finished off her week by scoring 16 points and claiming nine rebounds in 17 minutes of action in the Paladins’ 80-41 pasting of Converse on Monday.

“Celena has worked extremely hard to be one of the biggest offensive threats in the SoCon and is only going to get better and better as her confidence grows,” said Furman head coach Jackie Carson. “She stepped into a starting role this week like a veteran and made the most of her opportunity.”

Taborn averages 12.1 points and six rebounds per game and has recorded 23 blocks. In addition to the 19-point, 18-rebound performance in the win over UTC, she has recorded 33-point and 24-point scoring performances against Presbyterian and North Carolina, respectively.
