We made do with what we had

More ramblings from a senior member of society: I am glad I have reached this age, because I can wear things that don’t match and can say things that I probably shouldn’t. So what if people look at me and think, “That poor old thing.” I am happy in my own little world!

Have you ever caught a snowflake on your tongue? How about eating snow ice cream? I certainly wouldn’t do that now! How many of you sprinkled laundry using a pop bottle with a sprinkle cap on top?

When we lived in the country, my mother caught rain water to wash our hair in. It always made our hair silky.

Did any of you return pop bottles to the store for a refund? I used to make dolls from hollyhocks. Did you ever catch lightening bugs in a mayonnaise jar?

I learned to sew on a treadle sewing machine.

I used to make book covers from brown grocery bags.

Do you see the theme? We did all things and many more with what we had available.

My grandpa’s saying was, “Use it up or wear it out; make it do or do without.”

Could that saying be used today? I am afraid not.

Remember playing Monopoly, Life, Sorry, Tiddley Winks, chess and checkers? Guess what? There was not a cord attached to any of them!

We had only two TV channels and no remote. Before that, we had rabbit ears. I was the official rabbit ears adjuster. Remember test patterns?

I guess technology has passed me by. Maybe that’s not so bad.

Is it just me or is there an influx of new words which have been added to our vocabulary? Until this year, I have never heard of vetted, recused and redacted. Those are not words I use.

How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Mine, not so well. I am still trying to accomplish some of the goals I set for myself.

Set some goals, but don’t be too hard on yourself; you are only human.

Maybe the Senior Center can help you obtain some goals. We have a fully equipped exercise room and a walking track. That should help with getting in shape.

How about just stopping by for a cup of coffee and some good conversation?

We also offer puzzles to put together, bingo and many other activities.

Some of our upcoming events are an open-to-the-public dance, March 16, and our annual card party, April 25.

Call 492-5266 or stop by for a tour or more information.
