Anna places first at cheer competition

COLDWATER — The Anna Rocket Cheerleaders won two first place awards during the fifth annual Game Day Cheerleading Competition, Feb. 24, at Coldwater High School.

According to coach Sherry Shoemaker, Anna placed first in the cheer competition, as well as in the half-time dance competition. Anna’s junior high placed third at the event.

Rachel Shoemaker, a senior at Anna, and Hannah Shoemaker, a junior, tied for first place in the jump competition for the second year in a row.

The Game Day competition serves as an end-of-season tournament for area squads to showcase their game day skills. This year’s participants included squads from Anna, New Knoxville, Celina, Coldwater, Parkway, Fort Recovery and Marion Local.

Squads were required to perform their schools’ fight song dances, their squads’ “hello” cheers, sideline routines used this year, and floor cheers demonstrating crowd-leading.

The dance performed for the half-time dance competition had to have been performed in front the school’s home crowd at some point this basketball season. No competition-style routines were permitted.

“The point of this competition is to showcase what good cheerleading squads do best: leading crowds and building school spirit,” said Shoemaker.
