SIDNEY — The west entrance to the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA was officially re-opened Monday morning.

“Today is a great day for many reasons, but it is especially special because we get to celebrate and officially announce the completion of our new and beautiful westside entrance,” said Ed Thomas, YMCA CEO.

The entrance, said Thomas, is the most-used entrance to go in and out of the YMCA. If is also part of the original building, which was constructed in 1972.

“About a year ago to this day, David O’leary, our operations director approached me and shared that we had some members interested in helping us make some improvements to this entrance,” said Thomas. “When he told me that it was our very own Tom and Sandy Shoemaker who wanted to make this wonderful gift, I quite frankly was not very surprised.”

In addition to the newly-renovated entrance, a new steel Y logo was donated to the organization by Mike and Bruce Toal from every Day Technologies. This is the second sign the business has donated to the YMCA.

Sidney Mayor Mike Barhorst said he wasn’t surprised that the Shoemakers stepped forward to assist with the entrance renovation project.

Companies who assisted with the entrance were Freytag & Associates, project manager Andy Wiford, Jay and Tom Westerheide and Tom’s Lawn and Landscape.
