SIDNEY — Sidney started its season with two-set wins over Indian Lake, Houston, and Wapakoneta in a quad match on Saturday at Sidney Middle School.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Indian Lake 25-17 and 25-14.
Faith Bockrath set 37-of-37 with 18 assists, setting up Alina Kindle for eight kills and Arielle Snider for five while Abby Nuss added four kills. Bockrath, Snider and Nuss each served two aces.
Sidney then defeated Houston 25-21 and 25-20.
Snider drilled 12 kills on 17-of-20 attacks. Darien McBride knocked down six and Kindle added five. Allie Herrick erased a four-point deficit by serving 14-of-14 with five aces and Abby Nuss fired off four. Bockrath directed the offense with 21 assists on 53-of-54 setting.
The Yellow Jackets finished their day with a 25-21, 25-13 victory over Wapakoneta.
Snider, McBride, and Kindle led a balanced offense with five, four and three kills, respectively. Snider tallied two blocks and Abby Nuss recorded a solo block. Snider also scored three service aces and Herrick and Payton Boshears added two each.
Sidney (3-0) is back in action on Tuesday at Tippecanoe, which will be the team’s Greater Western Ohio Conference American North Division opener.
Houston splits at Sidney
The Wildcats split two matches at Sidney on Saturday.
Houston opened with a three-set win over Indian Lake. The Wildcats lost the first set 25-21 but won the next two 25-18 and 25-8. They were then edged by Sidney in two sets.
Russia 3, Covington 0
The Raiders opened with a dominating road win over Covington on Saturday. Russia won the first game 25-13 then followed with 25-5 and 25-8 wins to close out the match.
Ashley Scott had 13 kills and nine aces for Russia. Laurissa Poling had five kills, three blocks and four aces. Jenna Cordonnier had 23 assists, five digs and two aces. Kendall Monnin had seven digs and one ace and Morgan Wenrick had five kills and four digs.
Lehman Catholic 3, Vandalia-Butler 0
Lehman opened the season with a home win over Butler on Saturday. The Cavaliers cruised to a 25-10 win in the first game and won the last two 26-24 and 25-23.
Lauren McFarland had 11 kills and five digs for the Cavaliers while Alexis Snipes had 22 assists and nine digs. Olivia Lucia had eight kills, six digs and three blocks. Reese Geise had seven kills and Heidi Schutt had three aces and five digs.
New Knoxville 4th, Fort Loramie 6th at Coldwater Spikeoff Invitational
New Knoxville finished fourth and Fort Loramie finished sixth at Coldwater’s annual season-opening invitational.
The Redskins lost to St. Henry in three sets to open the tournament. They won the first set 25-20 but lost the next two 25-21 and 28-26.
Fort Loramie then beat St. Marys by two 25-16 scores and lost to New Knoxville 25-21, 25-11.
The Rangers lost their first match to Ottawa Glandorf 25-18, 26-24 but beat Miami East 25-23, 25-19 and then Fort Loramie to earn a fourth-place finish.

Northmont 4, Sidney 0
The Yellow Jackets lost a season opener at Premier Health Stadium in Clayton on Saturday night.
Sidney coach Jamie Fridley said he was pleased with the team’s performance against a senior-laden Northmont squad, especially since Sidney is starting three freshmen.
Northmont took a 1-0 lead early. Sidney played even until the about the last seven minutes of the game, when the Thunderbolts scored three goals.
“We didn’t start the season off with an easy opponent; playing Northmont at their place is never easy,” Fridley said. “But we played very solid for 73 minutes and ran out of gas.
“…Stats do not look very good. We only took four shots all night, so we really need to find some kind of attack, but we will work on that Monday.”

Botkins 1, Graham 0
The Trojans opened with a 1-0 win over Graham on Saturday in St. Paris. Katie Egbert scored an unassisted goal for the Trojans.

Lehman Catholic 4th at Schroeder Invitational
The Cavaliers came in fourth in the eight-team Schroeder Invitational on Saturday at Schroeder Tennis Center in Tipp City.
Claire Larger finished fourth at first singles. She beat Northwestern 8-1 in round one, lost to St Mary’s 8-1 in a semifinal and lost to Chaminade-Julienne in the third/fourth place match.
Sarah Gibson finished second at second singles. She beat Northwestern 8-0 in round one, beat Fairmont 8-5 in a semifinal and lost to CJ 8-1 in the finals.
Angela Brunner finished second at third singles. She beat Carroll 8-0 in round one, beat Kenton Ridge 8-4 in a semifinal and lost to CJ 8-3 in the finals.
Keira Burns and Ann Pannapara finished seventh at first doubles. They lost to Kenton Ridge 8-5 in round 1, lost to Northwestern 8-1 in the backdraw and beat Celina 8-3 in the seventh/eighth place match.
Shannon Staley and Brieanna Werling finished fourth at second doubles. They beat Carroll 8-0 in round one, lost to CJ 8-3 in a semifinal and lost to Northwestern 8-1 in the third/fourth place match.
“Very good day for our team in a strong tournament,” Lehman Catholic coach Tim Ungericht said. “Great for their confidence moving forward in our season. We were a little down with the 0-4 start against a tough schedule and needed a good day as a boost and we got it.
“Two of the top teams in the Miami Valley-area in CJ and Fairmont and the second-best team in the strong Western Buckeye League in St. Mary’s were the only schools to finish ahead of us, and we finished ahead of the top two finishers in last week’s Clark County tourney in Kenton Ridge and Northwestern.”
