Coin club offers free appraisals

SIDNEY — The Shelby County Coin Club will offer free, written coin appraisals from 4:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Community Room at the Amos Memorial Public Library, 230 E. North St.

The appraisals will be done by local professionals who are donating their time to offer this service. No offer will be made to purchase what is appraised; however, a list of local dealers who can be contacted privately later will be provided, if anyone is interested in selling.

“This is a great opportunity for us to reach out into the community, perhaps interesting some people in collecting coins, as well,” said SCCC President Jerry Tangeman. “People may be surprised to learn even some of the coins they receive in pocket change can have value.”

Some of the coins to which Tangeman referred are the 1982 dime without mint mark, 1995 doubled die Lincoln cent, 2007 John Adams dollar lacking the lettered edge, 2004 extra leaf Wisconsin quarter and the 2005 “In God We Rust” Kansas quarter.

Any U.S. dime, quarter or half dollar dated 1964 or earlier has value due to its silver composition.

There is no limit to the number of coins that can be examined. U.S. and foreign coins, paper money, tokens and medals will be examined. Several of the dealers are familiar with other collectible fields and are open to assisting with such items privately at some later date.
