Some question has arisen whether Joseph C. Royon, newly-elected councilman from the third ward, can serve in that capacity since he is president of the Sidney Electric Light Co., which has a contract with the council for lighting the city.

May 14, 1919

J.W. Stuber, of Sidney, has been rendered a promotional advancement to assist chief warden of Ohio, effective May 15, according to A.C. Baxter, chief of the State Fish and Game Bureau.

The U.S. District Attorney’s office in Cleveland announced today that federal laws prohibiting the shipment of liquor into a dry state will be enforced in Ohio after May 26.

The 42 members of this year’s graduating class at Sidney High school are busy, under the direction of Miss Ida Hall, preparing for the 1919 Commencement. The commencement season will open Sunday evening, June 8, with the baccalaureate program in the high school auditorium at which Dr. Frank B. Dyer, former superintendent of schools in Cincinnati and Boston, will be the speaker.

May 14, 1944

Shelby county residents have been assigned a quota of $1,661,000 in the fifth War Loan drive, scheduled for June 12 to July 5, according to a joint announcement today by Joseph B. Cook and Frank Amann, co-chairmen of the campaign. The quota is $261,000 more than the goal of $1,400,000 which the county nearly doubled in the Fourth War Loan drive.

A special musical program in honor of National Music Week and a visit by the governor of the Ohio district of Kiwanis, Robert Sandborn, of Cleveland, marked the special meeting of the Kiwanis club yesterday. The musical program was presented by Miss Mary Clancey, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Griffis, and a string trio from Sidney High school, composed of Dorothy Dull, Dorothy Lerch and Charlotte Aschenbach.

Capt. Frank Marshall, commander of Co. K. of the Ohio State Guard, reported today that six new men have joined the company. At the same time he announced that a decision has been made to increase the enlisted personnel to 70, ten more than previously planned. New uniforms arrived this week along with other equipment.

50 Years

May 14, 1969

Plans for the total renovation of the present Ohio Building, on North Ohio avenue, were announced Tuesday evening at a dinner meeting for business tenants of the building at the Piqua Country Club.

In revealing plans for the renovation program, officials of the JC Investment Co., of Sidney, indicated the project should be completed by early fall. The investment firm purchased the building last July from William B. and J.C. Swonger. The Swonger brothers had acquired the building in 1938, shortly after it was built.

NEW YORK – Enroute to Europe for a vacation, Mamie Eisenhower reminisced Tuesday about Dwight D. Eisenhower. The widow of the 34th President told reports about an incident which she felt described her husband’s loyalty to America.

“We were only married two weeks, I was 19 and thought I was quite something. One day my husband sat down and told me, ‘My country comes first, you come second.’ As a bride I couldn’t understand, but his country always did come first.”

Mark Voisard says he’s ready to move on…and up.

The former Lehman High School standout has been nothing short of sensational so far this spring for the Colorado Rockies’ Class A team in Visalia, Calif. But he has a couple of things to prove.

For one, he wants to show that he belongs at least in AA ball, where he was hoping to be at the start of the season. And two, he wants to show that he’s completely recovered from a shoulder problem that forced him to take a long rest last summer.
