“It just needs a little bit of tender loving care.” That’s what my predecessor said a year ago in regards to a plant in her office. For several years she had fondly referred to it as “Fred.”
She was retiring soon and had bequeathed it to me as a parting gift. Anyone that knows me will find great humor in this plant being given to me. The only plants I have in my house are the ones you dust occasionally. My thumbs are far from being green, rather they are black as coal when it comes to gardening.
Don’t ask me what kind of plant Fred is, I haven’t a clue! I can tell you that he is green (when I remember to water him!) and his vine with leaves hangs all the way down the bookcase where he is perched. I don’t talk to him and on most days, I even forget he is there until I look over and see a little bit of yellow forming on his leaves. Then I remember something very important! I have to water him! I have to show him some “tender loving care.”
February is the month of love. Many of us will celebrate Valentine’s Day and remind our loved ones just how much they mean to us.
When I look up at Fred the plant, he reminds me that we all need some “tender loving care” every day and not just on special occasions through out the year. We all need to show kindness and love to one another each day. It doesn’t cost anything or even take a ton of time. A simple smile will do wonders. A quick text message or phone call costs nothing in comparison to the joy it can bring.
I watch as members at the Senior Center come together each day for different activities. They enjoy not just the game of cards, exercise class or billiards, but more importantly, they enjoy the “tender loving care” their time spent with each other provides.
