SIDNEY — Wilson Health entered the new decade focused on expansion efforts and delivering high-quality care to the communities served.
“No one could have guessed that come March, we would all face the most unprecedented challenges not only to the hospital, but to our community, the state of Ohio, the United States and the world,” said Mark Klosterman, Wilson Health chief executive officer.

I am very proud of how Wilson Health has weathered the coronavirus pandemic – in fact, I believe it has been one of our finest hours. In my 25 years in healthcare, to see our healthcare system come together for our patients and community in the extraordinary ways it has during this crisis, has been truly remarkable. Our staff and medical providers worked unconditionally to implement critical changes to our protocols, facilities and supplies so we were prepared for surges in COVID-19 patients while protecting the health and safety of all patients and those on the frontlines battling the pandemic.
As we continue operating during this “new normal” and managing the COVID-19 virus, we remain focused on initiatives that will ensure a successful future for Wilson Health and the communities we serve. Our mission remains clear and unwavering. We are dedicated to improving the health and wellness of our communities by delivering compassionate, quality care.
A 14 member Board of Trustees volunteer their time and expertise to provide governance for the Wilson Health organization. The trustees are: Devon Beer, Janice Benanzer (secretary), Andy Counts (chair), John Deeds (treasurer), Paul Dentinger, Chuck Edelen (vice-chair), Rudy Keister, Mark Klosterman, Doreen Larson, Tom Milligan, Dr. Eric Prenger, Tom Sheehan, Marian Spicer, and Jason Stiver.
2020 Highlights
The 2020 year was one of growth for Wilson Health in many ways with a strong focus on key organizational priorities. Through community, collaboration and innovation Wilson Health continues to be a trusted resource and partner not just in Shelby County, but throughout region.
The Wound and Hyperbaric Center opened its doors this past year to meet a great health need in the region. The new center uses a variety of clinical treatment therapies and support services including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) to treat acute and chronic wounds.
Offering convenient access to high-quality care, close to home is a priority at Wilson Health. With the opening of a second Urgent Care location in Minster, Ohio, Wilson Health now offers urgent care services in Shelby and Auglaize counties open seven days a week treating patients of all ages.
Wilson Health expanded its heart and vascular services with the opening of a Level II Cardiac Catheterization Lab and access to emergency heart care, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hospital can perform cardiac interventions without having to transport patients to another facility. Time is muscle, so the faster patients can be treated, the greater potential to save lives when it comes to heart attacks.
The Center for Orthopedics at Wilson Health opened in 2020 expanding surgical services at the hospital to include a dedicated surgery center for orthopedics at Wilson Health. The center is staffed by board-certified orthopedic surgeons offering general orthopedics and specialty care including sports medicine, total joint replacement, foot and ankle and reconstructive hand surgery.
Care beyond the hospital
Wilson Health Medical Group offers patients access to primary care and specialty services with physician offices located in Sidney, Fort Loramie/Minster area, Jackson Center, Anna, Botkins and Piqua, Ohio. With 46 medical providers, the hospital-owned medical group offers comprehensive primary care and specialty services including: family medicine; internal medicine; ob/gyn; endocrinology; ENT; pediatrics; bariatric; and general surgery. In 2020, Wilson Health Medical Group opened a new health clinic at Sidney City Schools to directly address health care access for school employees, students, and their families. The clinic is also open to the public for primary care services. A full range of age appropriate health care services are offered in the clinic.
Wilson Health offers a variety of Corporate Health and Wellness Services where employers and employees alike benefit from access to a full spectrum of occupational and industrial health services. Wilson Health offers both onsite and near-site innovative health solutions for companies with improved access to care for employees and program offerings where companies maximize the return on health spend and at the same time improve the overall health of their workforce.
Financial & service summary
Wilson Health’s financial performance continues to provide a means to add new programs, services, medical equipment and technology to better diagnose and treat disease as well as promote health education and prevention.
The area’s preferred healthcare provider, Wilson Health contributes significant financial resources to the area. Sitting at the number five spot amongst top employers in Shelby County, Wilson Health employs over 783 people and provides over $100 million in direct economic benefits to the area.
In 2020, Wilson Health provided over $8 million in care for patients who either had no means to pay or met the qualifications for charity care.
Wilson Health provided inpatient care for 2,773 patients in 2020. The emergency department cared for over 17,773 patients. Wilson Health also performed:
• 710 deliveries/births
• 4,121 surgical procedures
• 12,886 occupational health patient visits
• 32,320 cardiopulmonary and sleep lab procedures
• 48,162 imaging procedures
• 300,835 laboratory tests
• 28,506 home care and hospice visits
Caring for our community
The volunteers at Wilson Health donate their time and talent to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. In 2020, 60 Auxiliary members donated 4,167 hours of their time. Five local college students, majoring in healthcare related fields of study, each received a $500 scholarship to assist with their college tuition. The Shelby County Ministerial Association and members of the Chaplaincy Program provided spiritual services and Hospice volunteers provided assistance to hospice patients and their families in 2020.
Wilson Health is supported by a foundation, the philanthropic arm providing financial support to meet both ongoing and future health needs of the hospital and community.
In 2020, the Wilson Health Foundation used funds raised at its annual Casino Night and Golf Classic events to support enhancement and expansion of Wilson Health Cardiology services. Additionally, the Foundation was able to help support the expansion and opening of the urgent care clinic in Minster, Ohio and helped financially support service line development with the opening of the Wilson Health Wound and Hyperbaric Center. In 2020, the Foundation established the COVID-19 Relief Fund to assist with the ongoing needs of Wilson Health.
“The contributions of our donors make it possible for us to support and grow services and programs at Wilson Health,” said Karla Young, Executive director of the Wilson Health Foundation. “With the financial support of our donors, we continue to provide the right healthcare services for the people in our community – close to home.”
The Foundation Board is comprised of business, civic, academic, medical and philanthropic leaders who volunteer their time and resources to ensure Wilson Health continues to progress forward and offer quality healthcare, close to home.
