Wednesday, Thursday basketball roundup: Botkins, Russia advance to district semis

CLAYTON — The Trojans beat Mississinawa Valley 60-47 in a Division IV sectional final on Thursday at Sidney High School to set up a district semifinal against Shelby County Athletic League rival Russia.

The Blackhawks, which lost leading scorer Taylee Woodbury in their regular-season finale due to injury, led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-18 at halftime. But Botkins rallied with a 23-14 edge in the third quarter and 19-11 in the fourth.

Camdyn Paul led Botkins (14-10) with 21 points while Malaine Maurer scored 17. The Trojans tied a program record by hitting 11 3-pointers.

The No. 4 seed Trojans advance to face No. 2 Russia on Monday in Sidney. They lost 50-32 and 56-27 to the Raiders in SCAL play in regular season.

Russia 59, Bradford 11

The No. 2 seed Raiders built a 43-6 lead by halftime and cruised in a Div. IV sectional final on Thursday in Sidney.

Russia (20-4) advances to face Botkins in a district semifinal on Monday in Sidney. The Raiders beat the Trojans 50-32 and 56-27 in regular-season matchups in regular season.

Russia 73, Mississinawa Valley 49

The Raiders opened tournament play with a lopsided win in a Division IV sectional semifinal on Thursday at Piqua’s Garbry Gymnasium.

Brayden Monnin led Russia (20-3) with 18 points while Zane Shappie scored 18, Xavier Phlipot scored 15 and Braylon Cordonnier scored 13.

Russia, which is the Piqua D-IV sectional’s No. 2 seed, advances to face No. 13 Triad in a sectional final on Tuesday in Piqua.

Jackson Center 49, Calvary Christian 9

The No. 5 seed Tigers cruised to a victory in an Div. IV sectional final on Wednesday in Sidney.

Macy Klopfenstein led Jackson Center (13-11) with 17 points while McKinley Reichert scored 13.

The Tigers advance to face Fort Loramie in a district semifinal on Monday in Sidney. They lost 46-24 and 61-29 to the Redskins in regular season.

Fort Loramie 69, Troy Christian 23

Fort Loramie, which was ranked No. 2 in the final Associated Press Div. IV state poll of the season, cruised to a big win in a D-IV sectional final on Wednesday in Sidney.

Fort Loramie led 19-4 at the end of the first quarter, 40-13 at halftime and 57-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Victoria Mescher led the No. 1 seed Redskins (22-2) with 17 points and had five steals. Ava Turner scored 15 points and had five steals and five assists. Avery Brandewie scored 14 points and had seven rebounds.
