TROY — Laber of Love Pet Rescue was officially founded by Troy resident Nicole Laber in August of 2019 with a mission to give the old or sick shelter pets a place to spend their last days or months so that they do not die without knowing they are loved.
The mission of Laber of Love Pet Rescue is to provide hospice care to older pets or those with untreatable medical conditions that find themselves without a family; to allow these pets to live out the remainder of their lives with love, dignity and comfort by providing a safe home and necessary medical care and to provide education to the public regarding the care of these pets.
“We are all volunteers with a passion to help care for senior shelter pets so they can live out their best lives until we say goodbye. Our goal is to help as many shelter pets as we have Fospice homes for,” wrote Joe Laber in his annual progress update.
“We are always looking for loving and caring people to open up their hearts and homes to these amazing pets” states Founder, Board Member and Treasurer Nicole Laber. “We supply all the vet care, and dietary needs and the hospice home supplies the love and care.”

The second part of our mission is to provide education to the public regarding the care of these senior pets. One way we do this is with our monthly Humane Education Blog, which can be found on our website at laberofpetrescue.com. During 2022, Laber of Love Pet Rescue welcomed 10 new pets and six new Fospice families into the Laber of Love family. Unfortunately, four pets passed away while under our care during the year, but they knew love until the very end thanks to their amazing Fospice families. We currently have 10 dogs and two cats in our care who have various medical conditions.
Throughout the year, many of the pets in our care underwent surgeries or other medical procedures. This includes Roger, an elderly coonhound mix who had a six pound mass removed from his side. Prior to surgery, Roger‘s mobility was limited by the mass. Since the removal of the mass, Roger’s quality of life has dramatically improved. He is now happier and can move around freely and lie down comfortably.
While we do not put a price on the comfort and care of our pets, this procedure and others added up quickly, the report said. Our total veterinary costs, including the medications and supplements our pets require, for 2022 were $15,117.40. The total spent to feed our pets was $2,518.53.
