Ben Steinle, son of John Steinle, has built a miniature bowling alley in the rear of the Blue Front grocery for the entertainment of his young friends.

A 12-mile handicap bicycle road race will be held in this city next Wednesday under the management of F.O. Routson and Claude Heffelman.

100 years

August 9, 1923

The Majestic theatre has been donated by C.B. DeWeese for the memorial services for President Warren G. Harding, which will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Persons who can give flowers to decorate the stage are asked to leave them at the theatre Friday morning or call Frank E. Rock, who is in charge of decorations.

The Big Four will operate a special train Friday for those wishing to attend funeral services for President Harding in Marion. The train will leave Sidney at 9:35 a.m. and will depart from Marion at 6 p.m.

75 years

August 9, 1948

Three Michigan soldiers on weekend passes from Fort Knox, Ky., met violent deaths this morning in an automobile-truck crash at the south edge of Botkins. The three, with three other servicemen injured in the accident, were northbound on the Dixie highway when their car ran under the rear of a tractor-trailer about 3:00 a.m.

A new county softball champion was a certainty today after Harris Jewelers repeated its victory earlier in the week by downing Wagner Ware 9 to 2 in the semi-finals at Jackson Center last night. They will meet Jackson Center in the finals tonight.

50 years

August 9, 1973

BOTKINS – The appointment of Charles M. Elsass as postmaster at Botkins was announced today by Clarnece B. Gels, Regional Postmaster General of the 13-State Region. Elsass graduated from Anna Local High School. He entered the U.S. Postal Service in February 1970 as a clerk at the Sidney Post Office. In July 1972 he was appointed Officer-In-Charge at Botkins Post Office and has held that position until being named Postmaster.

New faces will greet many Russia students. Business students will learn from Gay Booher; Lori Lawrence, first grade teacher; and Sherry Wicherson, gifted and talented teacher.

Assistant City Manager Mark Cundiff is one of six candidates being interviewed today for the position of city manager of Greenville, Ill. and a former Sidney official, Frank Ciarochi, has accepted a job in Colorado. Ciarochi confirmed on Friday that he has accepted a position as town manager of Castle Rock, Colo.

Auto dealer Dan Hemm confirmed Friday that he is negotiating with Jim Brown Chevrolet Cadillac Geo, for purchase of the Brown dealership.
