May 10, 1899

The American School Furniture Company filed a mortgage for $1,500,000 in the county recorder’s office this week. There were revenue stamps to the amount of $750 attached to the mortgage.

At the last regular meeting of the Junior Shakespeare Club held at the home of Mrs. L.N. Norman, the following officers were elect- ed: Miss Lena Lierman, president; Mrs. L.N. Norman, vice president; Mrs. Earl Karmire, secretary; and Mrs. W.S. Ley, treasurer.

The work of excavating for the cellar at the new parsonage at Loramie’s has been completed. The Vonderhorst brothers have started the masonry work

May 10, 1924

A new Luxtone Beauty Parlor will be opened Monday in the Berger building on South Ohio avenue by Miss Agnes Wilson and her sister Mrs. Vandyke. The rooms will be those formerly occupied by Dr. Amanda Brown.

Jesse L. Frazier has been named local chairman for the drive seeking $1.5 million for the construction of a new Masonic temple in Dayton. Masons in seven communities in the area are joining in the effort.

Completion of the first successful tracer-controlled engine lathe to be designed expressly for turning steel mill rolls was announced today by the Monarch Machine Tool Co. Special demonstrations on the new lathe were held at Monarch today for a group of some 25 editors of technical magazines in the metal turning business.

New officers for the Sidney Theatre Guild were elected at a dinner meeting last evening at the Moose Country club. Wayne Wheeler will serve as president; Emerson Setsor, vice president; Miss Ann Carey, treasurer; and Mrs. John Lorne, secretary.

May 10, 1974

“Our main purpose is to help people in need.” The Rev. Ralph Metheny, pastor of Sidney’s First United Methodist Church, defined his responsibility as a ham radio operator, which expands his duties as a minister.

During the Class AAA section- al finals at Dayton Wayne High School, Sidney trackmen Jerome Tucker, Kris Haines and Todd Willman combined to set two new meet records, tie another, and establish four school marks. “I can’t recall Sidney ever having so many outstanding performances in one night,” said an elated Yellow Jacket Coach Duane Elsner.

The Sidney Education Association is collecting donations toward expenses of a recount for the 3.8-mill school operating levy defeated during primary elections this week.

PIQUA The Piqua-Lewis Boyer Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, held its awards tea recently at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Some area students were honored as DAR Good Citizens. The DAR Good Citizen contest is open to all high school seniors. Each school is asked to select a student who has the qualities of dependability which included truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality; service which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others; leadership which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation, to an outstanding degree. The contest consists of a questionnaire and essay. Each student is awarded a pin, wallet card and certificate. The Shelby County DAR Good Citizens included Kara Schafer of Fort Loramie, Rachel Stewart and Sarah Mertz of Sidney, and Chelsea Rhyan of Anna

WILMINGTON — The Sidney Lady Jackets have advanced to the second round of the Division I Sectional Tournament with a 16-6 victory over Wilmington in action here on Saturday.The win puts Sidney at 7-16 and puts the Lady Jackes opposite Piqua on Tuesday at Piqua at 4:30 in tournament play. They will host West Carrollton tonight in regular-season play. Jennifer Taylor and Rachel Thompson both swatted two-run homers for the Lady Jackets. Nicole Reinbolt was three-for-three with a double and three runs batted in.
