November 27, 1898

The Piqua Bowling Club will play a game with the Sidney Fountain Club at the Fountain Bowling Alley in this city on Wednesday evening. The second game will be played at Piqua on December 6. There will be six match games between the two clubs.

Heavy snows in the East have resulted in many transportation problems. Passenger train No. 11 , due here this morning at 8:02 a.m. from New York, was over four hours late in arriving.

100 Years

November 27, 1923

Members of city council at their meeting last evening passed an ordinance combing the offices of clerk of council and city auditor. The salary was fixed at $1,500. Another ordinance was presented and given a first reading, fixing the salary of the city solicitor at $1,200. A petition from the country club, asking for the use of water on the grounds was referred to the waterworks committee.

The Rush Clothing Store on the north side of the square was entered sometime between last midnight and 8 a.m. and the cash register was rifled and a wool shirt and other articles taken. Entrance was apparently gained by picking the lock on the front door.

Piqua and Miami county will soon have a motor cop. Action to name one was taken at a meeting of the county commissioners and officials of the Miami county Auto Club. According to law, a county having more than 40 miles of improved or paved roads shall have a motor cop appointed by the sheriff and paid by the county commissioners.

75 Years

November 27, 1948

Three American Legion Posts in the county – Sidney, Heiland and Jackson Center – and the Shelby County Veterans of Foreign Wars have passed resolutions endorsing the Red Cross blood program and have pledged cooperation in providing volunteer donors for the December 9th collection.

Two members of Sidney High School’s 1948 grid eleven were recipients of honors today after gaining berths on the All-Miami Valley team selected by the Dayton newspapers. Both Captains Al Ward and Tom Schlagetter were named, the latter a choice for first team end and Ward as second team quarterback.

50 Years

November 27, 1973

A November 13 coin-toss which made Roger Burch, 121 W. Ruth Street, Sidney’s Second Ward Councilman, was negated last night when a recount of ballots in all of Second Ward’s seven precincts revealed his opponent, incumbent Paul W. Koener, had won the election after all by a margin of 486 to 483. The original count on November 6 revealed a 486 to 486 tie.

While Christmas lights on the Shelby County Courthouse are already up, they will remain darkened according to county commissioners who announced today that decorations will remain unlighted to save energy.

Commissioner Merton Maxwell said the move to douse the lights was spurred by President Nixon’s recent appeal for government agencies to set good examples in energy conservation. Commissioner Donald Conklin said the board is “in the Christmas spirit” but also recognizes the energy problem. Conklin said the lights will be lighted on Christmas eve, however.

25 Years

November 27, 1998

A sad case has ended. A retired Sidney Police officer has pleaded guilty to theft of drugs and been sentenced to 60 days in jail among other penalties. Judge Schmitt handed down the sentence.

Dr. David Rhee remains in critical condition after he fell at home from a ladder earlier this week. Three local doctors have been handling his practice. He is still at the Miami Valley Hospital. Hs family is optimistic he will recover from his injuries.
